Hello, everyone! I'm new here and looking to pick up some knowledge for a new caliber.

Planning on picking up a Savage 110 Predator in the new year in .260 Remington for deer and coyotes. Since the fur isn't worth much from the coyotes, I am not concerned about saving it and just hunting to help some local farmers, so I would like to have one load that I can use for everything.

Shots on deer in my area can range from 10 to 350 yards in spots and a bit farther on daytime coyotes.

Currently thinking of something in the 100-120gr (ballistic tip or soft point) range if anyone has any recommendations for the uses mentioned.

Looking forward to hanging out around the forums and getting to know everyone.

Welcome to the forum, you have good taste in cartridges! I've had a 260 since it was introduced in 1997 and love it. I'm with Jim on this one on starting with the 120 gr Ballistic Tip. We load that bullet in my wife's 6.5x55 and it's awesome for deer. Powders in the 4350 burn rate are excellent for the 260 Rem. The 129 gr Hornady Spire Point would be good too but the Nosler will give you more speed.

Welcome to the forum, the 260 is a great cartridge. Its probably my favorite. Ive typicaly loaded mine with a 143 eldx, i have loaded the 129 hornady in a light recoil load for my daughter when she started hunting.
I am looking to start loading up some in the 120-130gr range to use as a deer and wolf round. Best of luck it is a fun round to load and shoot

I think you'll be happy with that rifle . I bought a 260 for my grandson , it's a dandy rifle and cartridge . I have a bunch of info on this forum , about the rifle . if you're a reloader , there is a bunch of reloading data included in those threads .
I’ll check your posts out when I get home this afternoon. I was asked why I wouldn’t get a “more common” cartridge, my reply is that I like to be different (and this way, no one at camp can ask me for ammo lol!)

i haven't loaded any of my 2 260rem's yet, but have used sierra 120sp and 140 sbt's in 264wm (mainly the 140's) with either imr's in 4831 and 4320. my fanness (yes it's a word;)) have grown from my lonely 264wm in '76 to 4 more cartridges over the last 8 years (264gren, 260rem, 264creed and 264prc). iirc think i do hhave a box or 2 of 120bt's, but haven't loaded and yet.

i fell into the 6.5manbun only cause it's a 26cal AND i didn't know there was a 260rem ar barrel. i own very few ba's (7 iirc) and only in long action magnums. if it fits into a short action and smaller i'm putting it into an ar!

I will second the advice on the 260rem and the 120nbt, a fantastic bullet. Generally speaking, varget for 100 grain bullets, H4350 for 120’s and h4831sc for the heavier 140’s and beyond. Welcome to the forum and I look forward to hearing how this cool little cartridge works out for you.

Welcome aboard. You have good taste in choosing the 260Rem. It's very versatile, just like the 6.5x55. As others have said the Nosler 120BT, Sierra 120gr and don't overlook the Hornady 123SST. The Sierra130grTipped Game King has performed well for my son and his family in the 6.5CM. You have lots of choices. Let us know how they work out for you.
Dan.

I didn’t know it was available in an AR either, thanks for the heads up! But I live in NY state so it’s just easier to go with a bolt gun (though I do have one AR in 5.56 as a night rig for predators and one in 300 blackout for youth hunters to use, they’re just….New Yorkified)

Welcome aboard! I noted you like the less common cartridges. I think there are only 3 or 4 of us who favor the old 300 HH. There is a beauty of a pre 64 model 70 at Shed Horn Sports in Ennis, 300 HH. At a good price. I think that would fit nicely in your safe!
Now I’m googling the round, thanks haha. Im already planning out my next few purchases. 260 and a 1911 in .460 Rowland being the top 2 on the list.

And they will ship :)
I'm lucky enough to live just an hour away, always an enjoyable roadtrip.

When I had my 260 Rem, I was using Federal's 142 gr ammo in it and performed fine. For handloading I was wanting to try the 130 and 140 gr AccuBonds, but didn't get around to it while I still had the rifle (a RH Sako 85 VLS with set trigger). It was sacrificed for a LH rifle purchase.

What barrel twist is on the Savage?
There was an early article (2011 Shooting Times) that mentioned that the first Remington barrels were 1:10 and later changed to 1:9 due to stability issues, and improved performance. Ruger uses 1:8 twist. Kimber uses 1:9.
The 120/123/129 gr bullets should work fine for deer and coyotes.
