I was able to draw a caribou tag this year. No joy on my bison, sheep, and brown bear draws.

We are also trying a community harvest system this year for moose. It should give me a pretty good chance at an any bull tag to fill.

Either way it should give me a chance to test out my soon to be completed fast twist 270 win. 150gr LRAB should do nicely. I honestly can't think of a better combination of cartridge and bullet for a caribou rifle.

Congrats on your tag

I'm pretty excited to hear and see your 270 Win. It sounds real good as far as the build. Looking forward to seeing the workout you put on it.

Congrats on the draw. Your fast twist 270 Win sounds perfect and if the 150 gr ABLR doesn't work for some reason Berger and Matrix make some high b.c. 277 bullets now.

Pleased to hear that you got the caribou draw. From your posting I would assume that some of these draws are rather limited. Would I be correct?

The draw system is VERY complicated. The closer more accessible herds are all draw or registration type hunts with fixed quotas. This tag is not difficult to get but comes with the stipulation that you must only hunt moose in the same GMU, that severely limits the cow/meat moose fm draw hunts you can put in for. Wears trying a community harvest system out this year, limiting me to that GMU for two years but it comes with access to any bull tags. It also has a host of other conditions including rather extreme salvage requirements.

This tag I drew is an open till filled type tag but gives a really good chance at taking a nice bull.

Gotcha! There must be a way to manage the herd rather than managing the hunters. Sounds as if Alaska is trying to manage the herd. It is a thankless job for most game managers.

You almost need a PH.D. To understand all the regs and conditions!

It's mostly about access here in Ak. With less than 10% of land accessible by vehicle the hunting pressure is pretty substantial. If they didn't manage the easy access herds they would be shot out very quickly.

I haven't had a chance to hunt up in 25 yet. Most of my hunting is in units 7, 15, 13, 14, and 20. With my limited time off it just takes too long to get that far north.

Congratulations on picking up the Cariboo tag . The 270win will do great with the 150gr. ABLRs if not might be a good chance to try the XLD-Xs.
Looking forward to a range report or 2.

Blessings,
Dan

I got the DC590 bou tag this year for the Talkeetna mtns. Flying in with Meekin's at the end of August in one of his cubs. Will look for a griz and black bear as well.

Congratulations and good luck

I am on the Canada side of the border in the Yukon but I have a friend that hunts unit 25 with some success and with less hassle. i.e. draws, etc. Plus, it seems to have pretty good herds of everything, except goat.

Was wondering if any member of this forum hunts 25 ?

Thanks bear for your response to my question

I get up to the south eastern end of the unit- White Mountains/ Mt. Prindle- area on occasion. Lovely spot to chase bears.

Also have a friend who homesteads on the Kandik R.

How much notice would you need to meet three or four young ladies ( and maybe Dr Mike ) at Ft Yukon this summer ?

Your friend must live fairly close to the mouth or has a good flat boat. I have been there with a friend and that river should be called Rock river (-: Are there still good herds of sheep up in the White mountains ?

It'd be tough to get to Ft. Yukon, If you're floating the river I could maybe make it to Circle or to the Haul Rd. bridge.

Yeah- the Kandik is a rock garden. My friend just flies in and out or canoes in from Eagle. What a haul.
