Cross referencing loading guides it appears the alliants guide seems to be the most conservative guide of them all. Has anyone else noticed this? Its not just charge weights but speeds as well?.?.?

Alliant's guide is now officially junk, in my view. It's about as useless as teats on a boar hog.

Alliant reloading guide is really not a valuable thing. If you lose it, you're really not losing anything.

Since the data is strictly for components made by ATK, it has limited value to me.

Ya info is very limited and all of the charges I looked at were at least 1-2 grains less than any other source I found.

I would suspect, they are conservative for reasons of components like Mike says, amongest probably other reasons. I don't mind their conservative approach. Most everything starts low and works up anyhow. Then too, I chrono most everything also. But any manual is just a guide, as all are tested with different components.

I still have some Hercules R12 that I have to go back and refer to old guides for a couple new calibers that have been tried. The old manuals were not as conservative, but some of the powders with the same name/number are different than they were with what Alliant makes now. R12 is still my favorite powder for 22-250 and 50-55 grain bullets.

I'd love to see RL12 available again. It occupied an honoured place in the pantheon of powders.

I always heard it was a screamer with the Whelen and lighter bullets and I have to think it would be a perfect powder for the 358 Winchester, as RL15 is a little too slow in most cases for me.

It is probably good they don't make it any more, it would just cost me more money to keep it around.

As for the Alliant reloading guide, I still like to see what they print, but with QL and great manuals available now, I really rely on them anyhow.

Here's a question for you? Was Alliant Powder company at on time Accurate Powder Company? I have two Accurate Hand loading Guides, one is an 85 the other is an 01. They only list RL powders. Did Alliant buy out Accurate.?

I don't think Alliant and Accurate were ever entertwined. Accurate Arms Company, Inc., was in McEwen, Tennessee, and imported powders from Europe and perhaps Canada, and maybe even Australia, as I recall. Their branding and catalog were bought by Western Powders (owners of Ramshot) sometime along about 2005. Western consolidated the TN operation into the existing Western Powders offices in Miles City, MT, and have been selling it the same as AA did since then.

Alliant is descended from the old Hercules Powder Co., which was a spinoff from Dupont.

Interesting that you have those two guides. Any chance you could scan them to pdf and email a copy to me? I'm always interested in curiosities. PM me if you can scan them in.

I use the Alliant reloading guide for reference only.

I cannot but perhaps my wife can. We will be home next week and I will sweet talk her then!

I have an older Alliant guide that has a lot of good data, and their website is far more valuable than the printed matter. They are good for the shotshell loader like myself though.

The website has data for different brands of bullets than ATK products.

Dub, Hercules was formed as the result of a Sherman Act Antitrust Suit against I.E. DuPont but not from IE DuPont. DuPont stopped making double base powders but continued with all other powder products. Hercules continued making their double base powders, but not DuPont's formulas. DuPont later formed IMR to make single and double based powders.
