Am I Just Dreaming?

Dang, not sure about the dots but te Classics are awesome rifles. Very nice Whelen.

Maybe someone "notched" it like in the old west notching was for kills made! That's the first thing that crossed my mind. I tried to find pics of another but didn't have much luck.

I thought I'd never see the day when I would be any rifle in a synthetic stock. Ugly to me and some looked like they got barfed on. /quote]

I love the look and feel of a nice wooden stock. I still like the old M700 BDL type stocks even after having one since '82 or so. I built two Lefthand flintlocks out of curly maple that just begs you to run your hands over them.
But, when you drag into camp after a hard day and just collapse, or it's raining, or you've had your hands all over the gunmetal, it sure is nice to be carrying a stainless rifle with a synthetic stock!
They have a niche for sure!
Good luck with the heart. My younger brother had 3 bypasses, then 2 years later had 5.
He didn't like it either but he's going strong now.
He also decided to quit smoking on the doctors strong advice.
BTW, take care of yourself first. From experience, I know, the dog will understand.

These were my first synthetic stocks. Everything I've owned over the decades were always wood. You can't beat the look/feel of nice marbly Circassian or French walnut! That still holds true but I'm not shooting looks and after some research found the Predator Hunter Max-1 with the AccuTrigger and AccuStock to be just the ticket for what I wanted and accuracy has been very good.

Darkhorse-it's not my ticker that's the problem...it's my left leg, the femoral artery. My heart, according to my family doc, is like a 30 year old. I only wish that leg was. I'm not too crazy about having to have a vein from that leg stripped out and used as a bypass around the other bypass I already have but, whatever it takes to get it back to half way normal again I'll endure.

In my recent quest for a nice rifle in 35 Whelen I ran across this one. I'm puzzled, however, to the five dots after the abbreviation for U.S.A on the barrel in the last photo. There's also a series of dots at the other end. Anyone seen this before in a similar rifle?

Col. I have two Remington Classics, a 30-06 which was not part of the limited one year runs and a .35 Whelen. The Whelen has those 5 dots but the 30-06 does not. Methinks they may be there to denote the rifle was part of the Classic series. Just a wild guess on my part. Maybe others with Classics in other calibers will jump in.

I had never seen a barrel so marked and was curious. Thanks for looking at yours and solving the mystery. :)
