Another "opportunity"....

A buddy of mine offered me up a NIB Kimber Montana 8400 in .30-06....

NIB...

with rings....

and ammo...

for a steal...

Looks like I'll be back in the '06 business!

If the price is right, I'd say go for it. I'm not enthusiastic about Kimber, but that doesn't mean that they won't (or can't be made to) shoot.

I've heard a lot about the accuracy issues over the last few years. I had a couple of 84s when they first came out and couldn't complain at all about accuracy. One of them shot everything except Portuguese MG ammo into solid 1.25" groups....and I mean everything regardless of bullet weight or MV.

At the price he's offering, if it won't shoot- I'll screw a .35 Whelen or .338-06 tube on it and call it good!

That sounds like a good plan. It does sound as if you can't really go wrong with it. As I said, I'd be inclined to go for it.

The rifle is safely at the house...

It's not got a scratch on it and pristine as they get secondhand.

Now to pick a scope- I'm thinking Leupold 6x42 with the heavy duplex...but I'm kinda boring that way.

Congratulations! We'll be looking for the initial range reports. What are you thinking of testing first?

I'll tell you...I'll probably start with the plain old Federal 180 SP...blue box. They shoot pretty good in everything I try them in and the bullet performance should be pretty good to the limits I'd shoot an '06. Next, Federal 180 BTs, then I will likely move to the Core Lokts. I'll try the PP Partition at some point too.

Not really looking for a rifle to blast premium fodder through...I'm not convinced that at '06 speeds premium bullets really get you much.

Good choice of optics, although I can not do HD.

Very nice. Glad you were able to secure it. Pictures are mandatory around this place though!

I think that Federal 180 BT or PP NPT is some great stuff. That 180 BT in the 30-06 is an awesome performer.

...@ a buck more a box than the Fed Blue Box, I'd try the Fed Fusion. I've used in in .25-06, .270, 7mm RM, & .300 WSM, very good accuracy in a 1/2 doz. different rifles, exceptional bullet performance on deer & elk...
