Kinda looking for some "meat friendly" loads for whitetail under 200 yds to try in a buddies rifle.
He's looking for 150-165 class bullet loads.
I see some hogdon varget loads look like we could get 150s down around 2900 and 165s down near 2800.
Anyone have any luck w/this type of idea while maintaining accuracy?

Use a faster powder like Varget or 4064 and you can do this. I used to put 150 grain Ballistic tips on top of the book starting load of 4064 and get about 2900 fps. It was a real straight shooting load in that Winchester Model 70 (Baco) that I had.

RL15 and a 165 BT or AB will run around 3k. A touch more than a 30-06 but it's accurate and it'd be hard to tell the difference in recoil I'd think.

The faster powders seem to recoil less, at least from my "shouldometer"

I've used Trail Boss (24gr) to launch Speer 150s are 1800fps. Very friendly recoil levels. Never shot any big game with them, but damage to fur bearers isn't dramatic and I see no reason it wouldn't be just fine on whitetails at typical whitetail ranges. Accuracy isn't great (2MOA) but that is typically plenty for the ranges they're useful at.

4895 will basically allow you to duplicate an '06.

As food for thought- why not shoot some good controlled expansion 180gr bullets instead? Meat loss with 180ABs@2900 isn't bad in my .300WSM and ETips or TSX would be less still. Lots of great 180gr bullets in the .300WSM factory loads these days if reloads are inconvenient. A harder, slower bullet will tear up less edible bits than a soft bullet travelling fast.

H4895 was going to be my suggestion, but I see FOTIS got it already.

I'm running it in my daughter's 7WSM for 120bt's getting around 2350-2400 at the muzzle. Seems to be working well...shoots under an inch and killed her a nice 6pt this season.

I can't imagine it wouldn't be similarly capable (H4895) when applied to the 300 wizzum.

Although you will cut recoil down some with 150-165s at 2800-2900fps, I got to agree with hodgeman's last paragraph. I guess it depends if you are wanting a "go to" load or not. I like to get set up and zeroed with a load that I'd use for everything I'd use that rifle for. I hate re-zeroing for different loads and trying to figure out what the last load I shot was. The WSMs I have like to be run at or near full throttle. That's not to say they won't shoot reduced loads. There just isn't much point in doing it for me. Don't shoot 'em where you eat.

I agree with you there- I'm typically a "one load per rifle" guy. I shoot darn near everything with a 180gr AB at 2925fps. Very little that won't solve- moose, caribou, bears, wolves, sheep, goat. I can't legally hunt bison up here with it (although I'd have no reservations about its effectiveness)...but that tag is so long odds I'll just buy a new rifle if I draw it.

Thanks for the input so far. Our deer hunting here in Wis can be different from other areas. Alot of it involves thick woods. There are times you can barely see the deer. Maybe you're lucky and see the entire buck at one time....often its bits and pieces. I'd bet most Wis deer are taken under 50 yds and not shooting what you eat isn't always an option either. Thus the desire to detune a bit.
