Okay, a scouting trip with a bear tag in my pocket and a bear rifle in hand. I like "armed recon" for a title though. Reminds me of years gone by.

Spent the morning drinking coffee and talking with Mama. Haven't seen a lot of her lately. Then headed out for an afternoon scouting trip, knowing I was unlikely to see any game animals. Had a golden eagle soaring overhead, and saw a number of small animals though. Spent four hours hiking the hills, glassing the same. I know it's good mule deer country because every step was either across a steep sidehill, steep uphill, or steep downill. Heck, I was even breathing hard and sweating coming down the doggone ridge! Some kind of steep! Good country though, and I do believe I'll be there opening morning for mule deer.

Found fresh deer and elk sign. Was sort of hoping to find a bear, but never did. Got one heck of a workout, renewed my knowledge of an area I've hunted before. Also missed my Seahawks beating the tar out of New York! Doggone it. We don't win often, so I don't like missing those games...

I thought this view was pretty dramatic. In my youth I spent a lot of time up in places like that. Now I don't. At the time I was simply enjoying being young and fit and free. Now, the thought of going up there simply doesn't appeal.

There's got to be a mule deer buck in there somewhere...

Here's that Nimrod pack I bought a while back. Growing rather fond of it. Also the big Ruger, a .44 S&W, and the Swaro rangefinder. Pretty much my constant companions in the hills, although I do change out rifles a lot depending...

I'll be up there again, in a week, deer tag in pocket.

Great pictures, Guy. When retirement does take effect, you might want to consider photography. You certainly have a good eye for composing the picture. Wish I did as well. That is certainly some lovely country you are hiking.

I almost didn't haul the rifle along - had little reason to think I'd bump into a bear - but it sure felt good to have the big Ruger along with me, carrying it up into the hills. Had to keep telling myself "It's NOT deer season yet, if I see one, I can't shoot it."

Would have felt pretty silly if I'd seen a bear and the rifle was still at home.

Sure enjoy getting out in that country and plan to be there much of next week. Hoping for some snow, down a little lower. Seldom happens during the October general season, but I can hope!

Thanks for the compliment on the photos. I've had a few published over the years, but mostly I'm just a shutterbug. The advent of decent quality digital cameras really woke up my old interest in photography. I'd like to get something with a long lens, for wildlife photography.

Guy that is some fine looking buck country for sure!

You miss one heck of a game! I haven't seen them play like that for a long time. It has been fun (and not so fun at times) watching the youngest offence in the NFL grow from game to game. They are really starting to play like a team, and don't ever give up. The D is darned good when they are not on the field the whole game.

Great pictures Guy! That is some awesome country and that 375 looks to be right at home as well. Looking forward to hearing about the buck report from you this year. The Fall is finally starting to set in a little more around here and with an elk tag in the safe, I am a happy camper. Can't wait to see what comes out of those hills you take so many pictures of. Scotty

Beautiful country Guy thank you for the photos.
Look forward to more photos and the story behind a good hunt.

Blessings,
Dan

Thanks for the pictures Guy, wish I lived as close to the mountains as you do, I would take advantage too. Look forward to seeing a picture of your deer.
