Rusa Deer
It was cold for me. 20 to 25 degrees. The people were great. Its a husband and wife team. Eric is a great guide and guy. Kerri runs the lodge and cooks a great meal. She also does the salting of the capes. The hunting area is in the Snowy Mountains. Man there were sheep and kangaroos all over the place. Had a blast.

Wow fhats sounds awesome. Never knew Australia had that kind of hunting. What caliber rifledid you take?

Corey

Some great trophies there, Russ. So, give us a rundown of the hunt. Were you able to spend quite a bit of time?

Great photos! That stag of yours has remarkable headgear. Wow! Soon as I saw your post I headed out to the kitchen for another cup of coffee, just so I could take in the photos.

The fallow and rusa deer are both impressive trophies too - but that stag - that rascal just grabs me. Very much like an elk.

Congrats on a great hunt.

Guy

Russ, great pictures! Looks like a great hunt. What part of OZ did you hunt? Scotty

Russ

Great pics and trophy's. What was terrain like, was it fairly flat or mountains. ? Thanks for sharing. !

Those are some great critters partner, I've heard very little about the russa deer, can you give us the low down?

Russ -
great to see critters from other parts of the world! Looks like you had a great time and collected some nice trophies.

It was hilly country as its part of the Austrailan Alps (Snowy Mountains), so there was a lot of up and down hills. It was all spot and stalk. They were many small herds of animals. He had Red Stag, Rusa, Fallow, Axis, Black Buck, Sambar, and large horned Goats. The ranch is about three and a half hours west of Camberra.
Guy, Not as big as Elk, but his head gear is auwsome. We were watching him for two days, but just couldn't get a good shot at him. We finally got him on the fourth day after we spooked him from a small stand of trees. He ran up a hill and as soon as he went over we hoofed it up and caught him at the edge of the forest. He was in the shade and didn't see us as we were in the tall grass and hidden by a tree. I used the tree as my brace, and Eric (Owner) guesstimated it to be about 300 yards. I had my Weatherby Vanguard in 300wsm as the Nosler wasn't ready in time. :( Man those 180 grain Partitions hit hard. The Fallow, was also hard as we had to go through a cut and came up to them with about 15 minutes of light left. He was up against some bushes which made him hard to see. But with his horns sky lighted I was lucky to get him. The Rusa's well they were in the rut so they were easier to hunt as they were chasing the girls. Humm.
Mike the hunt was for five days. We were very very lucky to have five days of cloudless sky with no rain, as the guys before us had rain, wind and sleet, and the guys after us had rain, wind and sleet. We had a blast. To bad Eric is retiring.
Russ

That sounds great. Five days w/o rain and/or snow can be a real blessing in the field.

Really, really nice, that is awesome, I think that was cool and I know you had a ball. Very well done my friend, very well indeed.

Great trophies Russ. That's a great way to sell a hunting trip as vacation with the better half. She has said she wants to go to Australia.

Mine too! I would love to have a few weeks to hunt with my mates over there. I think it would be one of those hunts that would be out of this world fun! Scotty

I would have loved to hook anyone up with his outfit, but alas he retired this year. He is a one man show and his shoulders and back were giving him too much pain. You could also have done snow stuff up there.
Russ

Russ,

Awesome for you, great story and pix. Ever have the urge to adopt, I am available..
