ANYTIME....one notices 'craterization' around the firing pin indentation on the primer along with possibly an extractor mark on the case rim....you can bet your sweet arse you're over the recommended limits for pressure! Why ANYONE would want to go OVER the as listed loading recommendation is beyond me! Those MAX LOAD LISTINGS are in the book for a reason; not just some arbitrary figure that has been grabbed outa thin air! Steel...when subjected to high pressures is elastic.....and when it's had enough......an idiot will suffer the consequences of stupidity!! :roll: 
You are using the Fed 215 Magnum primer in a standard rifle and with a combination of a powder charge in maximum will cause pressures to skyrocket. Should be safer to use a standard large rifle primer like the Fed. 210's.
It will be wise to keep the velocity down a bit and to the 3400 range
I would not really be worried if I was you making these hot loads for someone else, if I was you and I would rather be safe than sorry.

WOuldn't the easiest way to determine if its a hot load is to measure the case head expansion after firing??? Try doing that on a couple of those loads and see what you come up with as to some factory shells or some regular reloads. I"m not sure how much is the tolerance, maybe someone else can chime in.....

I use mag primers in all hunting loads, especially when using slower powders, I work up to the max using the mag primer. The guy I load them for is 48 yrs. old, been shooting deer for nearly 40 of them so I don't argue with him I just load em. I don't use loads that hot myself, when using B.T.'s , I load 45 gr, IMR 4350 under 120 gr. pill, and a fed 215, with around 2800 fps mv in the same gun just newer, but the hot loads shoot fine in his gun, I check them religiously after each fire, and limit the brass to only 3 cycles before changing to new.

So are you saying I'm a dummy? As far as we are concerned we have used this load in his gun for several years without ever having any trouble, with the same results from the last five fired as we did with 6 boxes of 50 ago, which would be 300 rounds, so i'd say they're pretty consistant, I mean nothing ever changes in the load so why would it.

Dont have a chrono but this load is listed as a max in my manual so work up to it of course. The rifle is a ruger M77 (orange but pad for you ruger freaks). It has a 26 inch magnum weight barrel. I have a simmons 6.5-24X scope on it and this load is a one ragged hole shooter at 100 yards. The bullet is a sierra game king. My rifle does not like any boat tail bullets that I have found. OAL is actually quite short, will have to measure one and update this (if I can figure out how).

In my opinion, this is the perfect antelope load. I use the Nosler Partition bullet because at this velocity a close shot will cause bullet failure on lightly constructed bullets. MPBR is 322 yds. with a retained energy of 1460 @ 300 yds. This is a fairly hot load, work up slowly.

I agree 100%, all i'm saying is that the particular load shoots in his gun without problems, and as long as he's happy, and there's no apparent pressure signs then he will keep shootingm it, like in the last post I showed where in different instances people are loading hotter than his load, one being 3550, and the other at 3680 which to me would for sure be risky.

Anyone here have any experience with 225 BT in the Whelen? I have a load with RL 15-2740fps that shoots bugholes. I'd like to use this load on deer, but have been told that the 35 bt is really tough. I shoot 150s out of a 270 with very good results if you stay away from the shoulders. :?:
