barrel length measurement question

Can this chamber neck gauge be used to check barrel length for crunching numbers in Quickload, the way I am doing it is just use case with the gauge inside the mouth and push the case inside the chamber until it seats as far as it can go, but do not use the bolt and use a Dewey rod from the muzzle end and touch the case with it and mark the rod and measure for barrel length? Just trying the easier way. Or does it have to be from the bolt face with chamber closed to the muzzle as a measurement?

As I understand it, if you're doing this for OBT purposes just close the bolt on an empty chamber then stick your cleaning rod down the bore and put a mark on the rod right at the muzzle. Measure the rod from the end to the mark, and that's your barrel length.
