Just an FYI fellas.

So according to this if I am shooting a 45-70 (not listed) with H322 will last at least 20K rounds.

Fotis - I wouldn't be surprised if a .45/70 barrel lasted many thousands of rounds. Not at all.

What is the source of the chart? It looks old, given some of the powder designations.

At first glance I don't have any serious heartburn with it, though I wouldn't take it as an absolute given the variables involved in barrel life.

Rule of the thumb type deal Guy. Very close to reality though.

I disagree...

The general idea of that chart is correct, slower powders mean less barrel life....but 3,000 rounds from a 30 caliber?

Even a magnum will go that far, and a 308 much further...

I don't mean any disrespect FOTIS...but that chart completely disregards case capacity.

Just sayin...

What powder is used is dictated by case capacity and bore size. The more over bore the slower the powder used which means lower barrel life. I would say for peak accuracy life it's relatively close on the large capacity cases. It's also not that old of a chart. H50BMG is less than 20 years old. H5010 was it's predecessor.

That is does. If you look at 30 cal and 4350 the candidates are more than one

308 with 180
30-06 with 180
300 win with 180

These will not all do 3K rounds...more or less.

This chart makes me sad...less than 400 rounds from my 30-378 with the 50 BMG. That poor barrel is more than half-way in the grave.

I always hate this topic. Makes me not want to shoot my 300 mag and 270 win. I just need to get it over with some day and have one re-barreled. I just hate the thought of spending more on a new barrel then I did for the whole gun new! :(
