The barrel I was going to use fell thru, gunsmith accidentally ordered a 1-10, so it's time to order another one. I want a lightwieght, featherweight, contour fast twist .277 barrel for a lightweight build. So far the choices of fast twist 1-8, 1-9, .277 barrels that I know of are benchmark (1-9), lilja (1-8), or PAC-nor (1-8). Does any one have any opinions with this choice of barrel maker? I'm kind of leaning towards lilja cause they will do a featherweight 25" long so I could make it 24" instead of 22.

Thanks for the input

Others have more experience with this than I. I also build mine on Savages though I have a CZ Mauser at a smith now.
Seems like most of the major names make a fine product.
PacNor, Shilen, and Krieger and CBI are close to each other and share tech I believe, MGowen is making some good stuff. Currently have a McGowen, and a couple PacNor barrels being done FWIW.
Of the ones you mention, kind of hard to go wrong with PacNor. I believe those are the barrels Nosler uses and that rifle you have seems to do very well.

Each of the barrel makers you name make a quality product that will serve you well.

None of your choices are bad, Lilja is pretty good.

I'm limited by rate of twist. Hart, Douglas, bartlein, and shilen all have 1-10 as fastest twist in .277

I would call and ask Bartlein if they would do you a custom order twist to your specs as they are like #1 Competition Barrel maker and have been for a while! Not to say the manufacturers you mentioned are bad by no means or you could ask one of the others to do the same and see what they tell ya?

The cut rifled guys can do any twist you want but it make take quite a while to get it. I would call Schneider rifle barrels in AZ to and ask them too. His lead time was 8 weeks last time I got a barrel and he makes barrels as good as the ones you have mentioned.

I ordered a 1 in 9 twist Benchmark for the 270 Bee project and it just arrived last week, was told 4 months but it came in in about 2 1/2 months. My Benchmark 35 Whelen barrel has been great which is why I went with them again, They are very flexible in what kind of contour you can get, I bet they could do pretty much whatever you ask. Any of the ones you list will be good, I would go with one of the ones you can get fairly quick.

Benchmark is a good barrel I have one on my 300 norma. Lilja makes a good barrel as well. The reason I would go with benchmark is the fact they do support the shooting sports. Benchmark has donated several barrels to the local matches around here. That alone is why I would buy a benchmark over lilja. I have used both barrels and have been happy with both.

I have two PacNor barrels and I am very happy with them.
I personally would go with a 1-8 twist in a 24" tube.

Blessings,
Dan

There certainly isn't a bad choice in the 3 you are considering, a 1 in 8 Lilja should be able to stabilize and 277 gr bullet made. A 150 gr ABLR for long range and a 180 gr Woodleigh for a close range moose thumper sounds really good to me.

One of the VLD hunting bullets in 165 or 175 should be great at 2700-2750fps. The new Berger 170s are supposed to be impressive also.

Pretty cool stuff. Not a bad maker in the bunch. Pretty interested in the quick twist 270. That should really make those long bullets work well and man, you could get some awesome RPM's for great bullet action with the other standard 270 bullets out there.
