What are you using?

Heck, what am I using?

Am headed out for a spot & stalk bear hunt this September, with my son. He'll likely use the .30-06, the biggest rifle he's comfortable with. And dang is he comfortable with it!

So...

I'd like to use the .30-30, but ranges could easily get to 300 yards or beyond.

I used the .375 Number One when I got a decent bear a few years ago. Worked like a champ even at 300 yards, and everyone was sure I had plenty of gun to break bones & stop a running bear.

I've got a new .30-06 set up with an older 2-7x Redfield... It's showing good promise with 180 gr Nosler Partitions at nearly 2800 fps via Ramshot Hunter...

The .300 WSM, used time to time over several years now, is as yet UNBLOODED, almost a crime!

Beats me.

I have several that I can carry, and likely will carry some or even all of them at various times. I do want to blood my newer 300WSM, and so it will likely be toted at some point. My standard load for this rifle has been 180 grain TSX, but I will likely carry 200 grain Sierra Game Kings this year as they are shooting very well. Should I draw a grizzly tag, I will likely carry the 9.3X64, loaded with 250 grain ABs. I always enjoy carrying one of my .356s, loaded with either 220 grain Speer FN or 250 grain Kodiak FN bullets, and I know these will take down a grizzly quite well. I have a newer .280 that hasn't been blooded; I've got it shooting 150 grain PTs. It will be taken afield at some point this fall, and it may just account for a black bear. I'm certainly opportunistic, so should I be carrying another rifle, I will likely consider using it should I encounter a blackie (a not infrequent occurrence).

I only have one black bear to my credit, taken with the old Delux 71 Winchester and a factory 250 gr. silvertip load. But I have always considered a .35 Whelen caliber a fine choice. It has "reach" and carrys good bullet weight.

Setting that aside, my next bear hunt will most likely be taken-on when I'm carry'n a 45/70 Marlin 1895 rifle. I had one and let it slip away a few years back, so I'm lookin' again.

Classy rifle and a classic ol' Winchester Silvertip too... Cool.

Either my 7mag or 300 WM. 7mag with 160 Accubonds or the 300 with 200 Accubonds.

Sounds like a great time to break in the new CDL 30-06 Guy :)

If drawn for grizzly this fall the 35 Whelen will come out with me again.

Marlin 1895 Guide 45-70 with a Leupold VX-3 1.75-6x32mm loaded with Nosler 300 gr PT's at 2200 fps.

Where to get the PT's?
I got lucky and found a box with lots of dust on it. I have been saving them for just such an occasion.
