Bedding

Looks good Jake.
It'll pop apart.
Just an FYI, if in the future you don't have cutoff bolts to bolt it in, set the action and wrap it about two or three places with that rubber band stuff they use in rehab clinics to exercise and provide some resistance. A wrap of that around the lug area and another in front of the tang, knot it, and it holds it right there. I really like the blue wrap or red. Seems to work real well.

Well it came apart nicely. I did lots of overthinking on it. I had the stock bedding bolts and after popping the floor plate out used them and screwed them in and used them as punches to drive the action out with a little effort and a dead blow. It looks okay and it will work but I'm gonna do a lot of things different next time. I learned a lot like I used way too much epoxy, masking tape and the barrel channel aren't a match in heaven, maybe electrical tape would work better there because of the lack of surface area. I got some of my clean up done. Tape off wax out of the action floor plate cleaned. All that good stuff. Just got to finish cleaning all the release agent off and start reassembling the rifle. She now sits in the stock good and tight. Not like before when the screws were out and I could make it go clank clankity clank clank. I bedded the first 2" of the barrel as well where the chamber is as well. So it will have a full week to cure before I load up some rounds and shoot it next Thursday. Hopefully this was the problem all along I'm just hardheaded at times.

I want to give a special thanks to Scott, Pat, and Scotty for walking me through a lot of this. Thanks guys for all the help to all my stupid questions I truly appreciate the help.

This isn't actually as hard as it seems just time consuming to do it right.

Jake that looks really nice. I think you did a fine job. I believe that it will help immensely if your action wasn't sitting in there nice and snug and also may have had some weird pressures pushing and twisting on it as it wasn't sitting in straight either.

How you liking that Zeiss on top? I could not tell what power range that thing is and what size objective lense is on it?? Those look like Talley lightweight rings/bases, the one piece set-up. Do you like those? I hate to say Jake but if you have not lapped the rings yet, while your rifle bedding is curing, it could only help to do that and certainly will not hurt anything.

How much time do you think you have in your bedding project Jake? Just curious.

It's going to shoot great I just know it! (y)

I also tape the front, sides and bottom of the recoil lug and usually only bed the recoil ring, lug and tang. When bedding a wood stock I open up the entire barrel channel a good amount. Then take a 1/4 curved wood gouge and make a careful gouge down the center and on both sides of the barrel channel. These are too make the glass a little thicker in those areas.
I place several overlapping layers of electricians tape down the axis of the barrel starting at 2" ahead of the lug. The thickness of this tape will relate to the amount of free float desired in the barrel.
Then the first 2" are bedded tight to the barrel chamber. After it sets up the tape is removed and the barrel is glass bedded but still free floated.
The reason is I've had a lot of wood forends over the years warp. Hopefully the glass in the forend will help prevent future warping.
So far it's worked.
I use Accra Gel and try to use just enough to get the job done but not enough to create a big mess. For my personal guns I don't mind a tiny void here and there as long as the bedding job is not compromised.

Thanks Charlie at least it's consistent now shot a few groups Friday 2 in 1 out 4 groups so I shortened it up a little more and it opened up. So I guess somewhere between there it will be good!

If you need to soften the epoxy for removal anywhere, use acetic acid (vinegar) or stronger 17% acetic acid that you buy at the photography store? It will soften and let you remove the epoxy with an orange stick.

All these are 62 gr of H414 with a 225 PT @ 3.300" in the Before and After photos. I did try 3.290" and it opened up and I tried 3.295" as well they are noted on the targets.

I then tried a primer change but they don't like my rifle went from CCI to WLR and they don't fit tight. So I guess for the bear hunt I'm just gonna have to accept what I got out of the 225PT. Might try it @ 200 yards to see what happen this week and shoot a drop chart.

Have you tried any of the 210's yet Jake?

That's more than enough consistency. Any ideas on speeds?

Not yet. I'm gonna run them this weekend hopefully along with a graph out to 200 and maybe 300 see what happens. I think I should be around 2700-2750. According to previous data.

Might play with the 210's after depends what I got going.
