"Best" .270 bullet

SAS, I used to have a 140AB pulled from a bull elk. That bullet crushed both shoulders of my largest bull elk, and was under the hide on the far side. That was outta my 270WSM. Very good bullet too. I am not sure Nosler puts out a bad .277" bullet. I lost the bullet in between PCS moves but man, it was just like the bullets that come out of the jugs. That was shot into the elk at about 150/175 yards. Put him down right there though, after a botched 1st shot.

I have been Pretty dang happy with the 140 AB. You might want to look at the 130 ET. Gets you a bunch more speed, and when it is all said and done, will retain more weight than a 150 PT. Just a thought.

Darn good thought regarding the 130 E-Tip. Thats my next project. The way they peel down like a bananna is cool.

They are pretty dang impressive. The left one is a 130 ET out of a 270 WSM, the other two are 200 ET out of a 338 WM. Both into dirt @ 200 yards. All three lost 2 gr. I'm guessing that is what the tip weighs.

And, they look pretty damn sexy!

I had once read an article. Not sure where but if I can find it I will post it. It was about the monolithic bullets and the first attempts at making obe work. The first designs were originally designed to open the way they do now. And they wanted it to kill more with cutting edge like an arrow instead of shock. And everytime I see an opened Barnes or e tip. That's exactly start o think of.

The only bullet I have used for hunting in my .270Wea is the 150grain Nosler Par. It´s also the only bullet that my liljaBarrel will shoot with pinpoint accuracy. This bullet work from Gembok to a danish Roedeer. Minimal meatdamage. It´s doens´t become any better as I see it.

If a .270 caliber rifle is your weapon of choice, load it with
Nosler 150 gr. Partition bullets and you're good to go, coyotes to moose!

Well guys, I am a little different I guess :( I believe that every calibre has a pet bullet weight and the 270win is the 130gr. in my opinion.
I have shot the 270win for almost 50years and have shot every animal that Saskatchewan has to offer other than the caribou. For most of those years I shot the 130gr. Partition and can count on 2 fingers how many animals I have had to track. Since the AccuBond became available I have shot the 130gr. ABs. exclusively and never had a problem. As long as you know the bullet's capabilities so not to sit it up for failure you will do fine.

Blessings,
Dan

I have shot white tail and mule deer out to one deer at a long 425 yards with my .270 Winchester and 130 grain Partition bullets since the late 1960's when I bought my first .270 Winchester while I was living in Texas. I used my .270 for mountain hunting in Utah and Wyoming for 25 years, shooting deer and antelope at 200-300 yards across canyons and never had a failure to kill. In fact only one deer out of that entire group needed more than one shot.

If I was going to hunt elk or caribou with the .270, I would move up to a 140 grain Partition but for most of the deer that I have shot with the 130 Partition never knew what hit them and never needed a second shot.

I really don't think you can go wrong with any of the common .270 bullet weights. The .270 cut its teeth and made its mark early on with the 130 grain bullet. The 150 grainer will really carry the mail and penetrate well. My favorite, before the ABLR came out , was the 140 AB. It had most of the speed and solid sectional density for more penetration and seemed like the perfect blend of both aspects to me. Seems to fit the bill well for the game that you mentioned. I killed a lot of elk with it and its performance for me was nothing short of magnificent. I get a real kick out of it when folks criticize the .270 as a marginal elk round. I know a lot of folks in the Rocky Mountain West that would beg to differ. Partitions, ABs, or ABLRs all seem to work well and get the job done!

Great shooting rifles right there! Congrats and nice shooting. I appreciate the advice and insight. Certainly a pile of bullets that would work for me. As time and components come my way, I will experiment more. For now the 150 BT should do nicely for antelope and deer. My suspicion is that it would do fine through the ribs of an elk too, but why try with the 150 PT available? Good shooting and hunting to each of you!

Silentstalker, both your bullet choices are excellent in your .270. Good shooting and hunting to you too.

3-shot 130 grain Partition, pretty typical group from late September this year.

Very nice OT3, As I recall JO killed 5 grand slams,6 grizzlies, and who knows how many deer and elk. Not to mention plains game. All with that same bullet. I get groups just like yours with the 130 PT. I have a friend that shoots the 130 PT and the 130 pro hunter thru the same hole. He uses a pre-64 mod 70 and 60 grains H-4831. He has killed many elk with the load. I will once in awhile try to temp him into trying an AccuBond. He won,t consider such a notion. He says if ain,t broke, don,t fix it. Guess I can,t disagree with that.

My rifle will shoot the 130 Accubonds into groups close to this but not quit as small on the average. The Partitions have always shot a little better in my Custom Pre 64 Mod. 70. My Model 70 is fashioned after one of JOC's customs with a Bastogne stock on it. I have been using this rifle for 40 years, second owner and still shoots good with IMR 4350.

Question: has anyone shot an elk with and ABLR .270? I think that might be my go to bullet in my .270 WSM, assuming it will hold up, and shoots half-way decently....

They shoot pretty well Kurt, and I ran one into the jugs as well. They don't retain or penetrate quite like a PT, but they still go plenty deep, I think.

Accuracy is pretty good out of my 270WSM as well. I am still not finished with the load work on it, but very close.

Here was a target from 200 yards. While not perfect, they are getting there. Remember, jump them about .050" right outta the gates, or at least that was my experience with the 7mm and 270WSM's.
