We all have our opinions as to bullet weight/style for this application. I hunt deer in very hilly areas with many shots coming at 500 yds=/-. The cover is thick with open spots of small size mixed in.Although the distances are know via my rangefinder ,the shots have to be taken quickly.The bucks don't do the "magazine cover pose" for too long. Conversely, we get shots in timber at 50 yds or so. This variety is a real test for any load. My pick so far is the 150 grain AB sighted in 3" @ 100yds, velocity 3,320. It provides the max. PBR to aid in making good bullet placement more likely. What's your choice?

You've selected as fine a bullet as I could recommend. There isn't much that it won't do when tackling deer-size game.

I would go with the 180 gr AB or BT. The higher BC is a plus for less wind drift on those long shots.

Not many shooters can actually prove that at 400 yards. Or even twice as that under field conditions. :wink:

A buddy and I used to think the 165 gr Ballistic Tip loaded to about 3200 fps from a .300 mag was The Ticket for mule deer hunting. At first.
A few really mangled bucks later, and we decided to go back to a 180 at about 3,000 fps. It didn't take deer apart nearly as bad, and killed them just as dead.
That was in pre-AccuBond days (pre internet too) and we were possibly using some of the older Ballistic Tips that hadn't yet been toughened up. Still, the heavier, slower bullet was a better choice for hunting. It's not like a 180 at 3,000 has a looping trajectory anyway... :grin:

it's all true SD,...but "hold-over" is ALWAYS required at the long distances, compensating for drift is is not always needed....... 8)

I would run the 150 AB in a 300WM without too much worry. I think it would hold together just fine and since you probably aren't going to shooting 1000 yards with it, you would have a flatliner.. I stick with the 180's in the 300 mags though. I think 3000 with the 180 bullet is about as good as it gets for a general purpose all around killer!
It would be cool to see what the 150 AB does in the jugs at around 25 yards. At 3300 that is cooking! I imagine it would send some jugs flying!

Don't know if anyone mentioned this yet but the 150 gr E Tip would be one great bullet at 300 WM speeds, tough at close range and flat shooting.

I like the 180 grain for all around use in my 300 Win Mag. I killed deer with it from a spitting distance of 60 yards on up to 638 yards. I used the 180 grain Hornady BTSP exclusively up until the Peoples Republic of California banned the lead core bullet. I've shot this combo up to 1000 yards with no problem.
