Best round

I would say prob 223 would be best- even if I dont own one since I have a hornet and 22-250. If I was going to get a plinking/varmit gun that was cheaper to reload that would be it-brass n bullets are easy to get. right now most places have 420 round boxes of Fed/lc ammo for around $160.00 that would give you ammo to shoot to get brass.

I'd look at the 223 rem but that will limit you to varmints only. Brass and components are inexpensive, quality military surplus ammo with reloadable brass is readily available, this caliber sips powder so a little goes a long way.

If you want something suitable for deer, 243 win or 250 savage or 257 roberts would be good bets but brass, bullets and powder bill will be higher. They are all accurate and easy to load for.

I too would look at the 223 or 22-250.

If you even have a small desire to shoot a deer or antelope then go to a 243 or a 6mm.

Its that simple.

You guys have all added great rounds, but I forgot to mention, no .223 or 22-250. I have one of each and love them but don't want to repeat rounds.

this is easy as I see you said varmint.

Get a .243
Components are easy to come by and if you would happen to need this rifle for something more than varmint (whitetail) then you have enough punch.

Biggest problem I see is the twist rate offered in just about every .22-250... 1-14". I wish somebody would tighten that up.

The good thing is, with a .22-250 and a decent population of varmints, it doesn't take long to shoot out a barrel, then a fellow can get whatever twist rate desired from Krieger or whatever barrel maker...
