My son Jeff opened his present on Saturday and had no idea what he was getting. I'm not sure, but his smile might be broken. He had that goofy look all day! Now he has to work and save his money for a scope. He starts his job right after school gets out this summer and I hope that by July I will be "forced" to have to load some 300 WSM ammo to shoot :!:

That is just so neat, David. Congratulations to your son on getting a quality rifle in a great cartridge.

AWESOME!

That look on his face is priceless. I'm really looking forward to seeing range reports, and of course to seeing a photo of him with that rifle, next to a mulie or a pronghorn, or whatever needs shooting!

Great Job!!!

Thanks guys for the thoughtful words. I notice an unfilled gap in between the scope rings and I sure think a Leupold 3.5-10x40 or a 4.5-14x40 will slip in there quite nicely!!

ON a side note guys, when we put Jeff's scope on his 6mm Remington I bought a ring lapping set and lapped the scope rings. I plan on doing it with these rings as well. I know I'm probably being anal (  ), but it does make sense that the rings if not perfectly aligned could put pressure on the scope and also potentially cause some internal problems with adjustment and other issues. Your thoughts :?:

David,

Excellent! Congratulations to your son, a B Day he will never forget.

Nothing wrong with lapping the scope rings. Great choice on the scope. A VX-3 will last the rest of your sons life, grea investment. The 3.5-10x40mm is an excellent choice and will cover just about any hunting situation your son will ever encounter.

Damn, you want to adopt a 43 year old son? :)

Not having either one, I would think the scope ring alignment tool (didn't see it at SPS, so I hope the link is cool with the mods) would be more useful.

Given the choice between the two scopes, I'd definitely go with the 3.5-10x40 VX3

I'd go with the 3.5-10x in a heartbeat. Gave one to my son, while I kept the 4.5-14x for my long-range rifle. The 3.5-10x seems to have a much better field of view in the lower powers. Nice for hunting.

I suspect your son will always remember that feeling. What a great smile he has, and careful with the rifle, too. I notice he's got the bolt open in one pic, and removed in the other. Safety first in a crowd!

On your other questions, I can say I lap all my rings, except the Burris Signature ones with the little plastic inserts. Is it overkill? Maybe. But I don't get ring marks on my scopes. And I don't have problems with binding. So I keep doing it.

I'd sure have that young man look through a Zeiss Conquest in 3-9x40. Cost effective (still under $400 if you shop around online) and the best glass in the under $1000 class, in my opinion. It would be a near perfect fit for that 300WSM, too.

That poor boy is gonna need plastic surgery to remove that "cat that ate the Canary" look. Its things like that, that make "Dad" such a good job. It takes somthing to get a teenager to smile for a camera like that. Wish you years of happiness shooting together. CL

you

Great tool too pick up Dave, I have lapped all my rings, some take alot, some not. but it removes induced stress to the tube and prevents ring gash marks on the sopes.

Like I said earlier, you need to frame pix of that grin for the man cave..... Priceless.....

There is no measure for what that means to him now, or what more it will mean down the road. You and I both already know what these times and shared memories mean to us. Way to go Dave!

Thanks for the tip on that purchase on the alignment took BK. I don't have one (yet) so I used a inside outside dial caliper to make sure the rings were perfectly aligned by setting the caliper across the rings just below where the scope sits in the rings to make sure they would perfectly fit inside the caliper when it was tight against each side. I checked the rings up on the top edge of the lower ring half that way as well just to be safe. I also could tell when they were perfect when the 1" lapping tool sat and bottomed in the ring lower halves very nicely. When they were just a fraction off, it was simple to tell because you had to kind of seat the lapping rod instead of it just dropping into place.

Awesome rifle! Ill have myself an Extreme Weather one of these days. I would highly recommend a VX3 3.5-10x40. I work at Bob Ward's and got one with CDS through an employee deal. Smokin deal on it! I originally bought it to put it on a Featherweight 270Win that I ordered through work. Ended up cancelling that order and bought a Model 7 7mm-08 instead. I slapped the VX3 on it just to see how it would look. Not to bad but not what I want on it. I shot the 7mm-08 with that scope on it today and it was AMAZING! None of my other scopes (burris, nikon, sightron) even come close! I think Ill put this VX3 on my 300WSM and get a CDS cap to match my load and end up getting a VX3 2.5-8 for the 7mm-08. Your son's Extreme Weather and a VX3 3.5-10 would be a perfect match!

Great pictures of your boy with his rifle! That is excellent!

I imagine the 3.5x10 or 4.5x14 would be some excellent glass for the rifle. Either choice would be pretty awesome. I suggest getting the B&C reticle too. I love them. They are pretty simple and made for hunting. Your son is going to have a hard time justifying too many more rifles, with a 6mm and a 300WSM.

Like the others, I am dieing for a range report on the rifle. Those Extreme Weathers look to be a pretty serious rifle and well built from everything I can see. Might have to look at something like that for my boy in the next couple of years. Scotty

Scotty they aren't getting any cheaper that's for sure! Four years from now and he'll be going to college and I'm pretty certain that money will be tight for him so a rifle of about any kind might be out of reach and he should have this for a lifetime.

When Jeff was not at home I sat in front of the TV with a couple A-Zoom snap-caps and dry fired and worked the rounds though the action I don't know how many times, but a LOT! It did help smooth the action up as well as the safety as I worked it on and off a couple hundred times or more. The trigger was lightened just a touch and is right at 3 pounds now. I had my gunsmith skim-bed the action in the stock and pillar bedding to make sure it was a perfect fit as well. Again there goes that whole anal thing!  Jeff get that darn scope now so we can shoot this thing already! It would be great to get it out on some gophers/ground squirrels for a little practice! If Pop can shoot an antelope with a 416 Weatherby, we can hunt gophers with my sons 300 WSM!
