Black Bear Guns & Loads over Bait

I've shot the 300gr Barnes XFN quite a bit. They are very accurate, terminal performance is excellent and monstrous holes were absent.

Of all the bullets currently available for the 45-70 I'm willing to bet that the Swift 350gr A-Frame would be hard to beat for expansion and penetration. That is, of course, unless you are sold on the hard cast, flat-nose bullets that have so many followers.

Nosler should return to the 45-70 scene with a 400gr Partition and life would be good.

Decisions, decisions, decisions.

If Nosler made a 300-400 grain PT for the .458 lever guns, I would have think I'd died and gone to Heaven...

Or just brought back their awesome 300..

The 300 gr AB is an awesome bullet. At 2200 fps, I recovered them in the 8 jug which is impressive penetration.
A 400 gr PT would be an incredible bullet. Nosler would sell a train load of them!

I will look forward to seeing your bear/s!!

I am still using my little 7mm-08 with the 140 gr. TTSX's for black bears.

Good Hunting!

Bob

Well I did it. I pulled a bear tag for the first season, which starts on 9/10.

Congratulations, Jim. That'll be an exciting hunt for you. We're all pulling for you.

Excellent! Hoping you have a great hunt and end up with a good bear.

Congrats on the tag.

Good luck Jim! ..You'll be just fine pal, Black Bear hunting can be very addictive, my last bruin was shot @25yds with my 12 Gauge and 00 buck DRT  ..I've also used the 7mm magnum, and 338 win mag as well, with outstanding results over bait as well.I look forward to your results pal, Lou

Congrats buddy! Have fun and good luck the 45-70 and 300 PTs. Just make sure to count the bullets next time you get more from that friend of yours

Best of luck, Jim. They are a magnificent critter to observe in their own element. Have fun!

Thanks fellas.

Should be a good hunt. Lots of bears in the area I will be hunting.
The 1895 Guide gun 45-70 loaded up with 300 gr PT's should do the trick.

I should imagine that will drop a big blackie right smartly, Jim.

Over the years the 30-06 with whatever I decided to use in it was always enough and one shot kills. Have used Marlin 45/70, 300Wby, 7mmSTW, 300Win mag, 358Win and 7mm08

Guy and JD,

Good luck and is it bear season yet?

Getting an itch that needs scratching. :)

Remington 760 2x7 leupold w/ german post #2 reticle, 35 whelen with 250 grn part took this bear at 25 yards- watching a trail that bears use to walk down a ridge. If I go after bear this year I plan to take my marlin guide gun 45-70 with 1.5-5 leupold and probably use a 425 cast bullet going 1500 fps or a 300 grn sp around 1800 fps. the guide gun hasn't killed anything yet

yep it has taken 2 bears, assisted with a friends bear, 2 Roosvelt elk about 13 blacktail deer, 1 muledeer and a coyote. Its one of those guns that when you pull the trigger something is dead.
