I wonder if my 378 Bee would work?

Are you thinking AccuBond or one of those copper solids?
Pop, good excuse to go get a 460 Bee.

That is funny!

No black bear shoiuld be shot at 500 yards!

As for rifles the 300 WSM and 30-06/308 Win with 180gr bullets have served me well for black bears......a long shot at a bruin is 300 yards!

A very skilled hunter I know uses a Rem 600 in 350 Rem Mag for black bear and elk.

What's the barrel length on those 600's, anyway?

That sounds like a great rig!

I get between 2475 and 2500 FPS about 100 fps less than a 22" barrel.

That is with Speer 250 SP.....the only bullet I use and 60/RL15.

Interesting... yeah, I was curious how my .358 Win stacked up. It's a rebarreled Model 7 with a 20" barrel. I get 2620 fps with 200's and a scootch shy of 2500 fps with 225's... never messed with 250's. I don't think 250 Spitzers would really work in a .358 Model 7 anyway- too long.

The .350 is a true short action cartridge, right? How well does that short fattie feed? My M7 actually feeds better as a .358 than it did as a 7mm-08.

What's funny is how even people who should know better talk about the medium .35's as "short range calibers"...

I have a BLR in 358, but here I have nevered carried it in AK. I did have some Win 250 Silivertips that Win use too load for it......very good round. Hangs in their real close to my 348 Win with 250 Barnes FP. This was the round that put the 348 Win out too pasture.....but with a 22" barrel not my 20" BLR barrel.

Used the BLR hunting Deer back in CO/NC years ago.....thumper with the old 200gr Norma load.

My first .358 was a BLR, a couple years ago. I killed a large blacktail doe with it using the factory 200-gn Silvertip load. The results of that convinced me to rebarrel my favorite blacktail rifle, my 7mm-08 M7, to .358! Needless to say I love the round.

I sold the BLR but it wasn't for lack of merit- I just don't like having duplicate calibers arounds. Dangerous for a reloader if nothing else. I now have a BLR in .325 WSM and it's great. That one has the new pistol-grip stock, which I prefer to the straight stock. I had Neil Jones do a trigger job on it and it was expensive but now I have that mystical beast: a BLR with a good trigger! I carried the .325 BLR a couple days elk hunting this year but never got to try it out.

I see alot of good choices here. I really love long rang guns, but I bought a rifle with Black Bears & big Hogs in mind. The area that I hunt some in
the Ozark NF has some older Whitetails, Hogs & Black Bear in the same
general area. I usually do 2 or 3 short hunts in that area & unlike around my house where I Deer hunt the most, the longest shot I could possibly get in the NF would be 200 yards. So, for that I bought a MarlinXLR in 45-70 & mounted a 2x7 Leo. & it is great. I used the 300 NOs. Part. at 2,425fps. I only went there on just 1 2day hunt last fall, but I took a nice 8 point, which was a bang flop. I plan on going up there more next yr & hope to report results on BB & Hogs.

Man, that's fast! Have you seen that speed over a chrono or is that a book velocity?

I can barely crack 2000 fps with 300-gn Partitions from my Guide Gun in 45/70, which certainly does have a shorter barrel. And that's twisting it's tail pretty good.

That is chron. velocity & in several rifles. When I get a chance I will get the info & PM you. As always, work up slowly. This was out of 2 different
24"XLRs & several Handi rifles.

I have shot three black bears two over three hundred lbs at distances of 6,10,and 15 yards all with my 60lbs recurve. Its shot placement that counts I just mite go on a bear hunt using one of my 35 cal rifles a 35whelen, a 358win ,and a 35rem using +P loads at 2190fps. I'd likely take the 358win but I did drop a 200lbs hog with the 35rem which never took a step after the shot!

I like the bigger bullets for bears at mediun velocities but the 308 cal 180gr is classic for bears as well.

I don't consider myself to be an expert, but I have killed a few black bears (29) and grizzlies (1). The black bears ranged from 5 feet to 7 feet, with most over six feet. I have used a 7 mm Rem Magnum, a .300 WSM, and a .356 Winchester. All killed bears quite dead. I favor shots under 125 yards and heavy for caliber bullets (175 grain TB for the 7 mm RM, 180 grain Nos PT or TSX for the 300 WSM, and 250 grain Kodiak for the 356). I am carrying a .358 Winchester and a .350 Remington Magnum this spring (250 grain Hornady SP and 225 grain Nos PT), just for a change. Last weekend, I carried a .325 WSM loaded with 200 grain Nosler Pt. I have no doubt that any of these three will perform quite acceptably if I do my part and insure the shots are placed well. I am equally certain that my .280 Remington would work quite well with bears. I simply appreciate the extra penetration from a bullet with more mass and the extra "whomp" from a bullet with a broader frontal area. All my rifles have worked well to anchor bears with a shoulder shot, allowing me opportunity to then cleanly kill them with a quick follow-up shot. Most of my hunting is spot and stalk in mountain meadows or along cut-lines. I prefer to get within at least 100 yards, and that is usually possible if I take my time.

Gosh you guy's like your cannon's. .22LR in the eye. Yes the eye. lol

Boattail, do you consider that responable or humain? If you have seen a bears scull you would know frontal shots ate the head are easily deflected even by large cannon like guns. The frontal shot if for defence on a charging bear is under the head strait into the chest and any other time its the center of the vitals.

As for cannons large and medium bore guns with MZ of 2000 to 2700fps work better than the 300 and 7mm magnums for bears and they recoil less. So for me I concider a 7mm/300 mag a cannon not the 45-70 or 358 win type cartridges.

I was kidding. LOl. When i finally get enough points to get my Bear permit. I will be using either my .308. Or my 7mm Rem Mag.
