I was practicing this am w/ my .338WM. was shooting a proven load developed when the 225 Partition became available. these rounds are about 15 years old. I blew 2 primers!!!
never had an issue w/ pressure in the past w/ this recipe. RP nickel brass w/ George and Roy's primer sealer. called the nosler tech. he was also baffled. what do you all think? thanks! :?

Sometimes powder changes as it ages. I would pull apart all these loads, use the powder for fertilizer and repurpose the bullets.

This even happens to factory ammunition. I had some Federal premium .243 Barnes 85gr that worked fine when I purchased it, but blew primers about 7 years later when I got it out for a deer hunt. I sent the box and remaining rounds to Federal and they gave me a $50 check to replace the ammunition. I never heard what they found, but believe it was just old powder.

Like Whitesheep says it could be powder or possibly the bullets have bonded to the case neck causing a rise in pressure. If you have any left you could drop your seating depth a little and run the rounds through the seater again. If you hear a pop kind of sound you know the bullet were bonded to the case.

>>> great info guys. really appreciate it. I was stymied

At the very least make sure you wear shooting glasses.
I ALWAYS wear ear and eye protection ! good point . we should all emphasize this among one another. thanks.

If it's a pressure issue, I would have expected a heavy bolt lift and marks on the case head before primers begin to fail. I think it's far more likely that the primer cups have become brittle, but then the question becomes "how?" Maybe something environmental?

I do have a 25:06 that has blown CCI primers. I've never had an issue with another primer in it. I have used CCIs in all my other guns without issue.

>>> where the primers you refer to in old ammo like mine?

Mine does the same thing and it pisses me off. Is yours a ruger?

Mine is a Winchester Featherweight.
Only gun I've ever had that blows primers.
The first time it happened it was with fresh ammo well within book parameters.
Later I had some older ammo do the same thing.
I though possibly a sizing issue or a problem with the firing pin.
All I know at this point is I don't like it either.
