Bore Cleaning - bring patch back thru barrel

I noticed that a few bore cleaner instructions mention to only push the patch from chamber to end of muzzle but NOT --> to pull the patch back through to the chamber?

It does not mention the same when using a brush? I have always pushed and puled back with a patch.
Can someone explain why not to pull the patch back?

Thanks

You bring grit that is picked up back through the bore. You wipe with the patch, and redistribute grit and sludge with the return.

Thanks Mike
Yup I thought about that... but I never hear this for when one is using a brush... or did I just miss that? :?

Brushes by design don't really remove much crud, they just loosen it up, so back and forth brushing doesn't cause any more issues than one-direction brushing. Use the brush to loosen stuff (if needed) and then patch it out from breech to muzzle.

If you use BTE, your brushes will get very lonely and bored.

Scotty has me sold on the BTE. I am ordering a 16 oz today from sinclair international, unless someone knows a cheaper place. They do not sel it locally where I am at unfortunately.

This all makes sense now. The heavens just opened up. Thanks all

I tired the KG-1/KG-12 and it cleans very well. My understanding it was developed to clean cannon bores. Works pretty good on rifle bores.

Just my .02 here. If there is a time or point when a dirty brush , rod, or patch might do some damge to a bore I would suspect it would be the crown. Removing the brush or patch keeps you from dragging the crud back through that critical area. Bu then I am superstitious when it comes to my rifles. It may have no affect at all but thats my theroy. I really hate to "brush" a gun-bore. I find that most of my cleaning chores begin with a patch tightly matched to a jag, soaked with a jacketed-bullet style cleaning fluid. Push it thru, it falls off, into a trash-can and do it again. Three times, let it set for about 5-10 min., then 2 dry ones. How does the last patch look? Still got some sign of dirt on it? Do it all again. I don't get barrels very "hot" when using them, thats just me. I find they are not hard to clean.

I also use BTE, good stuff  It cleans well, even if the user doesn't follow the instructions closely.

That is quite a commendation! I have a bottle setting on my shelf of cleaning supplies. I still haven't used it. Guess I'll have to take it along to the range in the near future. I'm pretty good at not following instructions.

I am not sure if BTE cleans any better than Montana Xtreme Copper Killer, but it stinks WAY less and does work well.

I run patches in the bore, one way, and brushes both ways. I am gentle around my crowns, but I don't pay entirely that much attention. After seeing how 100's rifles have been cleaned since being in the MC, I think you would have to work pretty hard to injure a barrel. We used to clean our rifles so much I was thinking the blueing would come off!

I believe that I have cleaned my guns too much lately, the smell of that stuff isn't that bad any more!
