Brandon's Christmas Present

Yeah, it is a MK5 Lightweight I believe. Very light contour on the tube.

I know that Scotty is truly upset now that "all" of those model 70's, have seen a truly "great" rifle. Their may be a revolution in the safe.

Winchester. Weatherby. They're all "W" rifles, so they'll get along in the safe...

My Weatherby got along well with my Winchester, CZ's, Sako and Mauser's. They all got equal care, feeding and exercise. Nothing to complain about. All had the best glass that I can afford and equal love and affection.

If the serial # starts with H you have a winner. By far my favorites!

What you did was unbelievable in todays world Bill. (y) I hope you are with Brandon and Scott when it is used in the field for the first time.

Nice!!

Most important things -

1. Trigger tune:

I've used Ernie's trigger spring in a Japanese Mark V like yours with no problems.

2. Bed it into a better stock.
As an FYI if you choose a Bell & Carlson there are some fitment issues with the forearm on these (which Bell & Carlson refuses to admit despite photo documentation from me; long story ), and you'll have to remove barrel channel to be able to fit it well. However, when this is done and the action is bedded you'll have a great rifle. I'm doing this to two of my rifles right now.

Alternately you could use a different stock if you wished. I put Dad's braked 300 in a thumbhole from Stocky's and that rifle is highly accurate.

It appears to have a thinner 24 inch long barrel but were not called "Lightweights" by Weatherby. Instead, for whatever reason, they made most of the Japanese Mark V's with thinner 24 inch barrels for a while. The UltraLightweight name didn't come about until US production.

I hope he enjoys that rifle! My parents gave me my first Mark V as a Christmas gift several years ago, and I hope he enjoys his rifle just as much!

Thanks Doc V. Appreciate the info. Going to shoot as is for a bit and assess it some before we drop more money on it. If it gets another it would likely be a McMillan of some sort. They seem to make a similar profile to that stock which should be quite handy.

So Scotty all this talk about bullets and I don't see a scope on it yet!!  What are you thinking for optics?

Not sure yet David. It might just get a FX3 6X...

Or it might just get a 3.5x10 I have on another rifle. Not completely sure.

Have you thought about a Zeiss HD5 3 - 15 X 50 with a Z800 reticle?

I have Vince but right now, I'm in money conservation mode. Got tags to pay for. It can always be upgraded in the future. I am getting him a nice set of Talley screw locks so he can upgrade it easy enough in the future.

Good thinking on the Talley screw locks.

Might still be able to find a new older Conquest sitting on a shelf somewhere too.

Here are a couple pictures of Brandon's 300 Wby with a scope mounted up on it. I figure I'll let the kid borrow one till he saves up some money for his own...

Some Norma ammo to get it zeroed and test it out a little..

Mighty big of you to lend Brandon a scope, Scotty. It does look good, however. Norma is fine ammunition. Glad you could get it for him.

Santa did the work for the ammo.. Left it in his stocking..

I figure I can lend him the scope for a little while Mike.. He has a job now, time to cut the umbilical.. Darned scopes are expensive these days!

It does look nice Scotty. That rifle, scope and ammo should be all that he will need for your Elk hunt next year, and/or whatever else he wants to hunt. It was very nice of your friend, santa and you to do all this for him. Lucky young man

Scotty, If you have problems with that stock not remaining stable, let me know. The stock on my .340 went south fast and I have some insight into what went wrong. Just in case you need it?
