Browning BLR 450 marlin

I think i have figured out the picture thing now ! Here is a pic of the BLR 450 before i scope it - it will wear a 2-7 Leupold with Leupold QD rings so i can use the Irons if needed ! LOL  RJ

Jim, that is a good looking BLR. It will be a hammer on game, I have no doubt.

It is a cool gun. How is ammo or component availability?

Very nice shooting stick there. That is an awesome timber rig. Looking forward to seeing your results with this toy cannon.

I have being shooting a 1895g Marlin 45-70 for 14 years now so i have lots of bullets from 300 gr - 550 gr- i got some new Rcbs 450 Marlin dies the other day and i bought a box of Horn 325 FTX to chrono and see how the factory loads group and the velocity compared to my handloads . I also bough 50 once fired brass off another forum so i will have 70 rounds - thats enough for now . The leupold 1" QDR are on there way to me then i can mount the scope up !

Cheers RJ

Rem Jim and others,

Because of the suitability of the BLR for high intensity cartridges, could you not load the 450M to much higher pressures than those set for the 1895 Marlin?

Ie Bolt action and Ruger No.1 loads for the 45-70 are published up to 50k CUP, much higher than 450M specs (which I believe is only 42k PSI). I am talking about 400g bullets around 2200fps.

If the BLR can handle the WSM cartridges, I would have thought the standard 450M spec loads could be improved on significantly.

Interested in what others think. There may well be good reason not to pursue this idea but I can't see what at the moment.

I might well too Fotis, I am not saying anyone should do this, but I have a feeling they could.

In any case it would be nice to know that operating at 1895 pressures there may well be an extra safety margin with the BLR action.

BLR's and Horn 450 Marlin brass can go to 50000 psi for a BIG jump in peformance ! i will publish figures latter after my tests are done - Cheers RJ

I got some 500 gr 458 Hornady INTERBOND SP bullets from a friend today - they will load and crimp in the cannulure and fit in my 450 Marlin mags with the blocker removed - should be a penetrater at 1600 fps ! RJ

Yee Haw!

I wouldn't expect a lot of expansion, but they should penetrate T-Rex from stem to stern.

YUP ! pretty soon i will try them in some fir boards and see how well they do compared to my 525 gr Bear Tooth Pile Drivers which are right now the undisputed champions of penetration ! RJ

Brian and I shot some 500 grain Hornady DGXs into water jugs at 1200FPS. Can't remember the total number of jugs before it slipped out but it was around 16-17 jugs. We found it lodged in the wood back stop. Didn't expand any and matter of fact, except for the rifling marks on the bullet you could use it again.

What cartridge where those shot from ? :) RJ

 I have NOT got my 450 Marlin BLR to the range yet but Roys posting of the bullet comparison got me going again on it ! i have a bunch of different loads to try but heres one i need some comments on !

450 Marlin in a BLR 20 " barrel Hornady 500 gr INTERBOND ! I seated it to the cannulure just like on a 458 Win Mag would be - i removed the spacer block in my mag/clip so it will feed fine - i loaded it with a BUNCH of H322 powder and a Mag primer ! I checked the fit and there is still about 70 thou to the lands so a bit of jump . I figure it will exit the 20 " tube at about 1700 fps ! What you think ? Will it kill Black Bears ? LOL
