Just ordered one of these after discovering the tent I've used out west a few times is now leaking water after sitting through a thunderstorm the other night in my backyard and not too mention the condensation buildup on the walls also.

Anyone have any experience with this particular tent?

Pretty interested as well. We are backpacking this year in ID and I need a good tent, that doesn't weigh a ton.

I haven't tested it in inclement weather yet, Scotty, but I just picked up this one:

http://www.sierratradingpost.com/alps-m ... rFamily=03

for about $120 with the coupon from Sierra. That's the best price I could find online. Very light (about 4-4.5lbs packed), two vestibules for boots/packs, and it's a 3-person, so it will fit two men. I can tell you it's easy to set up, and stable in the breeze. I've got to get some parachute cord and make wind tie-downs for it, but it has all the right tie-down points on the tent/fly. I ordered the footprint for this tent off of Amazon for another $20-30, if I remember correctly.

Do your own homework, but I'm impressed with ALPS (we bought two packs and this tent from their lines).

They have some good deals if you shop them right for boots and gear. I like them alot. Kinda likea cheaper REI...

I have the XPG ultralight tent in the 3 man, I have been very happy with it, the one time I used it. I did get some decent rain (I would guess at least an inch) while up in the high country and it kept the water out. I would only use it during archery season--summer or early fall though. The tent is of very light construction. I don't think that it would hold up to a snow load or torrential rains. If you were expecting worse conditions I would consider the xpg four season or another tent.

I also have a MSR one man "hubba" that I love. Definitely sturdier and a person can see where the extra money goes.

Think I might be with runtohunt Scotty. I have a 3 man three season Marmot I got just his year for my goat hunt. It worked very well and has plenty of ventilation. It also kept me very dry through lots of rainy nights. It also has two vestibules where I could put my pack and boots, and still have enough room to cook in the vestibule. The 3 man is really a two man tent. The Marmot does come with the footbed so that is nice. It does have lots of stakes and tie-down cord that comes with it, but I also packed extra just in case. I kind of wish I would have gotten a 4 season tent and might have if I would have looked a bit more. I do think the Marmot was designed so it would hold some snow, but I don't know how much. One issue with the 3 season tent is if you have to set it up in the rain, obviously the fly won't be over it as you are setting it up, the tent is going to get a lot of water in it before you get it to the point that the fly is covering it up. That water will then be a bugger to get out of it, or most of it at least. Might make for soggy sleeping conditions. I would get a 4 season I believe next time as you can set them up in a storm and it's still dry inside. I do like the Marmot though. I don't recall the weight right now.

MSR does make a nice looking tent. Marmot also makes a 4-season tent also.

REI has great stuff and an excellent warranty. I once bought a pair of hiking boots from them. After about 5-6 years of wearing the snot out of them, the shank in the left boot broke. I happen to have them on while shopping for a new pair of boots. The salesman said what the heck is wrong with the boots you have? I told him about the shank and he sent me to customer service. The gave me a $75 dollar credit; the boot were about $150 new. Talk about a warrranty! I wouldn't hesitate to purchase anything from them  !!

REI does have a great warranty... the joke in my company is that it stands for Return Every Item, because we are a little, uh, hard on gear. I have returned two Camelbak packs that I have shredded on brush here in SoCal, and they didn't even bat an eye. (I've nearly shredded one of the replacements, too.) Some of the other guys have been through multiple pairs of boots.

The boots I am wearing right now are FULL replacements. I took my old ones in and they were starting to separate after 5 years of use, they pulled me up, and swapped me out. Plus, they gave me the old boots. I am going to pay 75.00 to get em resoled. Be like new then. I buy alot of gear from them, just for that reason. By the time I get home, they should have a new store built right next to my work! Game on!

I'm glad there is no REI near me. I'd be broke for sure. That does sound like a phenomenal warranty. With that sort of customer service they would certainly build loyalty.

They are a great company. Not a hunting based place, but just about anything else is covered and they sell good gear and stand behind it all. I am hoping maybe the tent comes around for hunting season. Might be a good investment for future hunts in the mountains.

For the past ten years or so I've been using this three-season backpacking tent from Mountain Hardware. They call it the Light Wedge 3:

Under that rain fly, almost the entire top of the tent is no-see-um screening. Lots of ventilation, which is perfect for summer pack trips, and even nice in our early season high hunt. I'd want a sturdier tent for four-season/mountaineering use.

It's billed as a three-person tent, so it's just about perfect for two guys with a little gear inside and under the vestibule as well. Not super light, about 6 pounds, 5 oz according to the Mountain Hardware web site. Very fast to set up - looks much like the tent in the REI post above. I've backpacked just about every summer with it for ten years now and have hunted from it about a half dozen times, maybe more. It's also held up well to some nasty weather here in the Cascades.

It works on motorcycle trips too. Camping along the Yaak, Idaho:
