Calculating Wind Drift

I thought I'd ask you competition guys. What is a good way to determine wind speed without a meter. I have heard that grass moves at a certain speed as well as the trees and so forth. So what do you guys use to gauge wind speed? I take shots up to 500 yards at varmints and don't have a wind meter on hand.

i use a kestrel but i have recently been weening myself from it. keeping mental notes and using a wind guage you can get pretty good at estimating wind after having a refernce to check your assessment with. meaning using a kestrel to get a feel for wind speed then only using the kestrel to check your own assessments to see how accurate you actually are.
