Cartridges off the Beaten Path

Holy smokes Brian! We have to get that rifle out! Man, I haven't seen many of them that won't shoot pretty well. Plus, a 125gr BT or 150gr PT would be pretty sweet for a carrying rifle or treestand rifle when the dogs are running. Man! I can't believe you held that 300 out on me! Here I thought we were friends! Scotty
Here is your bullet for the 300 Savage, Remington 150 gr SPCL.

Jim -
My brother is still hunting with the 300 Savage 99 that my uncle hunted with. It is still going storng!! :) He is still shooting that bullet out of one of the old Remington boxes.

Awesome picture Joel! Really good to see that 300 Savage still taking deer! Scotty

Short list, but it will grow, 6.5-55 . 303 Brit, does not really count. Since up here you can buy 303 bullets just about anywhere. And soon will have my 7mm-303 brittish in hand.

Savage 99s in 300 savage were all my family used to use. They have been passed onto my cousins now. I still have a family friends 1920 (I think) bolt action savage in 300 savage in my safe.

Other than that the only one that I might consider as off the beaten path might be my 375R, and maybe the 280 AI, but it seems to be getting more popular these days (and for good reason!). My grandpa gave me a M1 carbine that I will allways have. And my grandma gave me her Winchester 94 in 32 special for my 16th birthday. I have no clue how old it is, but its got to be up there.

The 25-06 was out this year I would think the 280 is right behind.

I'd surely hate to see that! It would mean selling the Winchester chambered in 280 that now graces my safe just so I could buy one of the new ones!

+1. I keep telling myself I have everything I need and should be putting the money into something other than guns, but if they put the .280 in a Featherweight chassis I may just jump off the wagon again!

Well I wasnt the first one to say it....but you know its coming. 250-3000 Savage  CL

I dont have a whole lot that would be considered off the beaten path.

I do have a .375 HH (show up to deer camp in Michigan with that....)
I also carry a Glock 10mm that has had some custom work.
I used to own a .356 win that I totally regret selling.
My grouse gun is a Beretta 28 ga o/u

I hear you on that. I gave one to a good friend, but I still kept two. I'm looking for another.

Beyond the ordinary .30-06, .223, .45-70, along with 2 lesser so 6mmAI's, ,,,there is the recently acquired .375JDJ/444, along with the 7BRM, 6.5x57AI Rimmed, and 9.3x74R, and soon to be .307. Wish I had the .218 Bee back however. It wasn't long ago I parted with it, the .243 AI, and also the 30-40 AI. Then too, I have a couple safe queens I had my Uncle build me years back. Those are both on Ruger #1 actions in a .30-404, and .30-74R.
But thinking I also need,,,err, ok want , either a .35 Whelen, or a .338-06 AI, for another inbetweener. But then the thought of a .405 Win. has been lurking in the back of my mind also.
It's a real toss up between the .35 Whelen and the .338-06AI. But believe the .338-06AI, has a slight edge in my wishes. And, well the .405 is just a cool old round that would be fun to cast for.
May be I should just get both or all 3, just to save on the headache that comes with thinking about it!

Had a Ruger M77 MkII in .257 Roberts, bought it to see how much time was required to develop a load and after a lot of time on the bench, (Loading and Shooting) with little real luck, I sold it. It is a great caliber, just not that gun .
Traded a Kimber BGR in 280 for a Montana 300 WSM when it first came out, now it's a 6.5/300 WSM w/ a Shilen Barrel.
Love my 280 AI Jarrett! I've taken a lot of amazing shots at game w/it over the years. And my Nesika from Kenny with his barrel on it in 300 Jarrett. After a lot of range time and 250 rounds later as a 300 WSM from another gun smith...... those things happen? I sent it to Kenny, re-barreled it and had it tuned in 20 rounds! But he is the best at building super accurate hunting rifles.
Oh Ya, a McBros SA 8.59 Galaxy Lilja barrel, in a High Tech stock. Fun gun w/ the 210 gr. XCL's, Oh, that dates me?
The 35 Whelen, I've owned three, a 7600 pump when Remington brought it out in 1988, a Custom gun shop version, and a custom Mauser M98 that now has Mark Bansners stock on it...... shoots the 225 X's like it was meant for each other.
My Browning 1886 45/70 High Grade, Ya it's life was a tree stand Bear gun like know other. 400 gr. Hawk bullets and one shot to the brain stem..... can you say lights out! But I haven't used it in years.... now it's for sale on GA.

But then again they are all great calibers at what they were developed for, so many choices, so little time to use them.

Looks like you you like the odd balls too.
257 Roberts is one of the best.

I'll tell you how oddball I am, I didn't think the 257 Bob was oddball! It's a pretty good cartridge, if woefully neglected by the manufacturers.

Have to agree with you Mike...I love all three I own with the AI being my favorite.

I really like my M700 Classic 257 Reberts. I did give some thought to getting it AI'd but didn't have the heart to do it. I might just have to have one built one day.

Happen to read from a couple or so posters, that the 375 Ruger might be considered,,"off the beaten path?" Oh really?

Well imo, for being a cartridge supposedly considered off the beaten path, the 375 Ruger seems to have have gotten quite popular over the last 4+ years. There are no marketing indicators or evidence for this round to be deemed off the beaten path.

Seems to me that its path is "very" well paved and will continue to be so for a very long time.

Let`s not forget who`s behind the 375 Ruger, namely Hornady and Ruger. And you can bet that within the next few years, Hornady will have in place 375 Ruger factory ammo, which will be available in many world-wide hunting venues including So Africa. Hornady is working on doing just that.
