We all know the lunacy that prevails among the huge number of various chambering that are available to the American hunter. I often think about this. Hence my post earlier this month that dealt with overlapping of chamberings. So let's pretend that we are a manufacturing company and we must limit the centerfire rifle ammunition that we must make. I know perish the thought! Anyway putting my sentiments away this is what I would keep.
CALIBER

17 --nothing. Everything can be done with a 204 Ruger

20-- 204 ruger

22-- This is a hard one because there are so many classics out there along with so many favorites. I would honestly keep the 223 and the 22-250. The hornet, 218 Bee, and the 225 Win are classics. As is the Swift (which is my favorite) and the 222. But is there anything that the 223 22-250 can not do that these can?

24-- even though I adore the 6mm rem the 243 win gets the nod (along with my inclination for getting sick :? )

25-- 250, 257 Bob, 257 Wby RIP. I am keeping the 25-06

27- Long live the 270 Winchester

28-- Is there a doubt? The 7mm rem mag flagship!

30 -- This is where I lose some friends! :( 30-06 and 300 Win. (I am not two crazy about either)

32 -- Nothing ! Do we need this Germanic wannabe here?

33-- 338 Win (not that it matters to me personally, never had a use for one)

35-- 35 Whelen what else?

37-- Is there a doubt here? The reigning Queen since 1912 The 375 H&H !

41-- Here is a hard one. I adore my 416 Bee but I gotta go with the 416 Remington. Way too popular to leave behind.

45-- 458 Lott please! What the 458 Win should have been! The 458 Winnie has always been plagued with problems and if you have to have one then buy ammo and fire them in the Lott.

Anything above 45 cal? Why this is an exercise in efficiency.

So what does all this mean? Stealing a line (and changing it a little) for the great Elmer Keith.

Screw efficiency! It is performance (and variety) we want!

What would you keep?

.223 Rem

.25-06

.30-30

.30-06

.375 H&H

I've no need for anything else, except a good .22 rimfire of course. Looks like I'd be doing a lot of culling.

If I was in Africa, hunting elephants & big buff, I might want something bigger. Or maybe not.

I would keep:

Under .22 cal - .177" bb guns, they are neat

.223 - never been a 22-250 fan

.24 - sorry guys I own one but

.25 - sorry guys, never owned one, never will (flame suit on)

6.5 - we need more 6.5's so keep them all and make new ones - :)

.27 - .270's are ok I guess

.28 - 7mmRM, 7/08 Rem

.30 - 30/30 - mutany if culled, 30/06, .300WM - sorry .308 see 22-250 explanation

.32 - 32 special

.33 - .338 Win mag

.35 - we need more .35's keep them all - .35 Rem, .358 Win, 35 Whelen, 35 WSM

.37 - no need but, .375 H&H because they are big

.41 - .405 Win, I don't want the ghost of Teddy Roosevelt haunting me

.45 - uhhh, 45/70

That be all yo!

Saddest thing I think I've ever heard... you ain't lived 'till you've quartebored

Honestly... if we're trying to pare it down... I could live the rest of my life (and fill many a freezer) with:

.22 LR

.25-06

.375 H&H

throw in a good solid 12 Gauge... and a 4" XD9... and I'm good to go... wait... that's my current arsenal... I guess I'm set.

Forgot to add the .22LR, gotta have about 10 of those in the safe.

Songdog, sorry man, the .25's just do not speak to me. The only one that I kind of like is the .257 Bob, 25/06, not so much.

.17- Nothing for me either, to windy around here for any use of one
.20- Sure, 204 Ruger works, although I have no use for one of them either...
.22- This is tough, but for a short range .22, I'll take a triple deuce, for longer range, 220 swift
.24- .243
.25- 2506
.26- 264 WM
.27- .270 Win
.28- 7mm RM
.30- 300 RUM
.32- 8mm RM
.33- 338 RUM/EDGE
.35- 358 STA
.37- 375 RUM
.41- 416 RUM
.45- 458 WM

A good 22 LR, 12 Ga 3" or 3 1/2", and a 45acp or 44 mag would round it out for me.

Ok well if I'm a gun company I would have a long and short action so my list will try have some of both I guess.

.17- I'm with Remingtonman, I own one and don't shoot it.
.20- Nothing. I don't see the point, Load a .223 with a 40 BT.
.224- 22 LR, .223, and 22-250.
.243- .243 win.
.257- 257 Rob, 25-06.
.264- 260, 264 WM.
.277-270 win. (would love to go WSM but it would be the only one I would offer, not to cost effective to tool up for one WSM.)
.284- 7-08, 7RM.
.308- .308, 300 WM.
.32-nothing
.338- 338 Fed, 338 WM
.35- 35 Whelen
.375- 375 h&h (I do love my 375 R but don't think it would sell as well as the h&h.)
.416- 416 Remington. If I changeed the h&h to the Ruger then I would change the Remington to the Ruger as well.
.458- LOTT!

Sitting here at work so I'll play

.17-Never had one or shot one, but used to be fascinated by them so I'll say .17 Fireball and .17 Rem just to have something to offer for the guys that like these things.

.20-.204 ruger, I'm not aware of any others that aren't wildcats???

.224- .22LR, .223, 22-250

.243- .243 Winchester, but I suppose there is room for the 6mm Rem as well. I'd like to see something in this caliber with a little more oomph like a 6mm-06 or 6mm-.284 as well.

.257-Not really a fan of this bore either although I have shot a couple of really accurate 25-06's and they seem nice. I'll keep the .257 Roberts and the 25-06.

.264-Love this size although I currently own none! .260, 6.5x55 (for Nostalgia and the performance!), 6.5-06 and .264 WM.

.277-.270 and .270 WSM seems to be catching on as well.

.284- I'll take a 7mm-08 in a short action and a 7 RM in a long action. We can do .280 too I guess.

.308- Same business as 7mm..... .308 short action, 30-06 and .300 Winchester mag.

.338- This is getting redundant.... .338 federal, .338-06, .338 Winchester mag, .338 Ultra is cool too.

.358- Keep them all, I think this caliber deserves to be more popular! Topping the list would be .358 and .358 Norma or .358 STA.

.375- H&H and .375 Ultramag is a showstopper as well.

My thoughts generally end about this point as I have no interest in ever shooting anything larger!

When it comes down to the nitty gritty, all one really needs is a .22LR., 30-06 and a 12 gauge shotgun. That would cover 99.9 percent of anything the average sportsman would ever do. Be boring as hell but that's the God's truth. :(
I think that if I were to pare my collection down, I'd go with the .22LR, 7x57 custom, 270, .280 Rem. custom, 30-06 .35 Whelen custom and all the rest would go. With the money I'd get from the sale of those unwanted guns, I could probably finance some pretty expensive hunting trips, maybe even one to Africa, something that's been an unfulfilled dream since I saw King Solomon's Mines. I might even keep the .257 Bob as my better half likes that rifle. One does accumulate a few toys over 54 years of buying and horse trading.

.22 LR

6mm Remington- Do anything a 223 or 22-250 can and then some, plus be the deer and antelope king! Better than any .243 Winchester out there.

.280 Remington

30-06 & 300 WSM

338-06

.12 GA shotgun

.17- IDon't need one. Son has a 17HMR, but I can't see ever having a CF .17 cal
.20- 204 Ruger is just cool. It is based off the old Three Deuce Mag
.224- 22-250.
.243- .243 win.
.257- 25-06.
.264- 264 WM.
.277-270WSM
.284-7RM.
.308- 300 Win Mag.
.32-325WSM
.338- 338 Win Mag
.35- 35 Whelen and 358 Win
.375- 375 h&h
.416- 416 Remington/Rigby.
.458- 45-70!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Those are my choices! Scotty

As a guy who generally likes oddball chamberings, I'm not even gonna play this game. .222? .220 Swift? 6mm Remington? .257 Weatherby? 6.5 Creedmoor/6.5x47 Lapua/.260? 7WSM? .300 Savage? .300 H&H? .358/.35 Whelen/.358 Norma? 9.3x62?

I would keep these

204 Ruger
223, 22-250
243,
25-06
260 Rem, 6.5x55, 264 WM
270 Win, 270 WSM
7mm-08, 280 Rem, 7mm RM
308, 30-06, 300 WSM, 300 WM
8x57, 325 WSM
338 Federal, 338WM
358 Win, 35 Whelen
375 Ruger, 375 H&H
No need for anything bigger

Honorable mention, 17 Rem Fireball, 6mm Rem, 6.5x284, 358 Norma and 9.3x62

For lever guns

30-30, 357 mag, 35 Rem, 44 mag, 444 Marlin, 45-70 and 450 marlin.

Of course the 22 LR needs to be kept

I am pretty happy with my current battery, just ned to fill the 6.5mm and 30 cal voids.

.17- This one really doesn't do anything for me
.20- I have no use for one of them, I have a 22-250
.22- 22-250 perfect for woodchucks and coyotes
.24- .243 Win I had a couple but prefer the quarter bore
.25- 257 Roberts, one of my favorites!
.26- I NEED a 6.5mm. Don't be surprised if one day I post a picture of a 260 Rem or 6.5-284!
.27- I have no interest, have a 7mm
.28- 280 AI, doesn't get much better for performance and a huge cool factor!
.30- 30-06 Had a couple. Great all around American classic.
.32- 8mm No real interest.
.33- 338 RUM The ultimate all around cartridge for everything in NA, Africa Plains Game.
.35- 35 Whelen, American Classic for sure. One of my favorites!
.37- 375 H&H One day I will have one.
.41- No real interest unless I ever get to hunt the big 6 in Africa. Then I will have a 416 Rem
.45- 45-70. The Marlin 1895 Guide is one of my favorite rounds for deer hunting here in MI.

Oh C'mon fellas your lists are getting long........ :) I can get it down to three "Gasp!!!" Here we go! Just to be a burr under the saddle....

22WMR- cause if you need a 22 ya might as well magnum it...just in case
250-3000 Ackley Improved- Nothing that wont do for antlered game to prairie poodles, and its cool.
7MM Remington Mag- Cause I dont expect to run into any Elephants and I'm not really familiar with anything bigger.

Hmmmm......Now wait a minute....just three calibre's sounds a bit COMMUNIST to me   ! Fun question though!

I would keep the .17HMR
223 is GARBAGE! I would keep the 22-250
243 is ok but no need when you have a 257 Rob!
Get rid of the 270. You don't need it when you have a 280 rem (best caliber ever made)
Of course you need to keep the 30-06
That's it there isn't an animal in north america that can't be taken down with an 06, so anything above 30 cal is just ridiculous overkill, or overcompensation for something else!

I am a simple man with simple needs
223
300 win mag, with one of these you don't really much need anything else !
458 Lott

You notice how UNcluttered my page is !!!! I may have shortened the format slightly but that was for clarity.

I'm slowly getting there. A few defining notes helps keep me on track.
Does it have RUM in the name? Keep it!
Would you stand your ground against a large bear, boar or Bull with it? Keep it!
If it's for varmints, will it take out a wolf? If yes, Keep it.
My KEEPERS:

7mm RUM
300 RUM
8mm RM
338 RUM
350 RM
375 RUM
416 RM

Oh yeah, Varmints:
270 WSM
22 LR

I have and use occasionally but could live without:
17 HMR
223 Rem
223 WSM
308 win
338 WM
450 Marlin

This is based on usage. Since I'm primarily a elk, deer, pig, antelope hunter hunting the west my choices usually boil down to long range and power.

Hate to say this, I've had two, but the 30-06 bores me to tears these days. Junk.
.17 Rem, just sold mine, not enough poop for Wyoming wind. Junked.
.223 Rem R-15, new coyote caller.
.243 I like. Killed biggest muley and whitetail. Might be replaced by the next two.
25-06, new gun, a keeper.
6.5-.284 N still waiting on the barrel. Very optimistic.
7mm Rem Mag, a meat hanger. M77 Bicentennial bought in '76, old reliable.
.300 Win mag, favorite elk rifle.
Would like a .45-70 for a timber gun.
Always thought a .375 H+H would make a great elk rifle.
.300-.378 Weatherby, Junk.
WSMs Junk. (except maybe the .270 WSM)
