We all know the lunacy that prevails among the huge number of various chambering that are available to the American hunter. I often think about this. Hence my post earlier this month that dealt with overlapping of chamberings. So let's pretend that we are a manufacturing company and we must limit the centerfire rifle ammunition that we must make. I know perish the thought! Anyway putting my sentiments away this is what I would keep.
CALIBER
17 --nothing. Everything can be done with a 204 Ruger
20-- 204 ruger
22-- This is a hard one because there are so many classics out there along with so many favorites. I would honestly keep the 223 and the 22-250. The hornet, 218 Bee, and the 225 Win are classics. As is the Swift (which is my favorite) and the 222. But is there anything that the 223 22-250 can not do that these can?
24-- even though I adore the 6mm rem the 243 win gets the nod (along with my inclination for getting sick :? )
25-- 250, 257 Bob, 257 Wby RIP. I am keeping the 25-06
27- Long live the 270 Winchester
28-- Is there a doubt? The 7mm rem mag flagship!
30 -- This is where I lose some friends! 30-06 and 300 Win. (I am not two crazy about either)
32 -- Nothing ! Do we need this Germanic wannabe here?
33-- 338 Win (not that it matters to me personally, never had a use for one)
35-- 35 Whelen what else?
37-- Is there a doubt here? The reigning Queen since 1912 The 375 H&H !
41-- Here is a hard one. I adore my 416 Bee but I gotta go with the 416 Remington. Way too popular to leave behind.
45-- 458 Lott please! What the 458 Win should have been! The 458 Winnie has always been plagued with problems and if you have to have one then buy ammo and fire them in the Lott.
Anything above 45 cal? Why this is an exercise in efficiency.
So what does all this mean? Stealing a line (and changing it a little) for the great Elmer Keith.
Screw efficiency! It is performance (and variety) we want!
What would you keep?
