I'm selling my wifes 7-08, Dies, rifle, brass, scope, and some bullets. Something about that little rifle just rubs me (and my wife) the wrong way. It shoots good, but I'm just not very fond of it. I was talking to my wife about getting her a .270 Win. and she told me to just get whatever I want and she'll shoot the 280 AI or whatever else I get  8).

So I want your guys thoughts. If I'm building another rifle I want it to be smaller than a 7mm and bigger than a 6mm. Weigh under 8 lbs and be flat shooting. I would not really plan on this being a longrange rifle, but just a good carry gun good for most hunting conditions. Mainly used for deer and speed goats, if I can ever draw a tag for one.

Here is a few things I have been mulling around,

6.5 WSM - 130 AB @ 3175-3250 fps

270 WSM- 140 AB @ 3150-3200 ish

270 Weatherby- 140 @ lightining (POP, could use some or your Bee knowledge here)

I know I have the 280 AI and there would be a bit of overlap, but since when has that stopped anybody.

I might think about a 6.5-06 AI, but I want a bit more bang than a 260 AI can offer.

There is quite a bit of overlap in each of the cartridges listed. I think it becomes a matter of logistics and personal desire that will dictate your choice.

Jake,

How about a 6.5mm Rem Mag. The 125 gr PT and 130 gr AB give 3000-3100 fps and penetrate deep.

I would say either the 6.5WSM/6.5-06 if you wanna go wildcat. If you wanna stay mainstream, the 270WSM is a WINNER. It is faster than all those listed except the Weatherby and only falls behind it a little. I would figure out what rifle you wanna use and if you wanna go short or long action, then pick whatever you want. They will all cost the same to build and brass price is about the same for them all too. Scotty

I think you first need to find out what you didn't like about the 7-08 before you decide. Was it not enough speed, to heavy, recoil vs speed?

I would be inclined to say 260 remington. It isn't flashy or all that speedy but it kills well, very light, no recoil and more importantly gets you in the 6.5 club. Or you could go old school 6.5x55 or 6.5-06 if you want more speed. But the game your after a 6.5 130 AccuBond at 2800 in 22" barrel will penetrate them lengthwise. I know I have tried it.

the 6.5 will actually pass the 7-08 in speed at about 3-400 yards even though it started out 150 fps slower because it is MAGIC!!

Well the 7-08 is just not pretty, its slow, I don't like the super skinny barrel, and it just doesn't get me excited. It works ok don't get me wrong, but if my wife is letting me upgrade my safe if I get rid of a gun, that is the one I like the least.

I had a Remington B&C edition 270 WSM that I let go to soon a few years back, and it has been haunting me ever since. What ever I do will be modled after that I think.

Jake, is that the 270WSM that you got rid of? Man, that is a sharp looking rifle. If that 270WSM is haunting you, time to fix it! Love mine. Really scoots 130's into the upper 3300 range pretty easily and 150gr PT's and BT's into the 3100 range. It is an excellent cartridge. Although, the 6.5-06 and 6.5WSM are pretty awesome and they will get you a seat at the 6.5 Campfire! Not that you wouldn't be invited to the fire anyhow. Scotty

If you want to spend the money on a custom, the 257 Ackley would be my choice ...I really like the 7mm-08 and know it isn't sexy, but it has served me very well from speed goats to elk. The 6.5 calibers are the most interesting to me right now. For something that she can handle well the 65.-06 or 6.5X284 would be really fun to play with.

Bigger than a 6mm, who needs something bigger than a 6mm for speed goats and deer! That's a match made in heaven!!

Okay if it must be bigger, and I think you all have cartridge envy, I say go with the 25-06 or the 6.5-06, if you must. :p

So many choices out there. Are you stuck on 6.5? If so 6.5-06 or 6.5x284 would be my choice. If you want a real wildcat how about a 6.5-280AI? How about a 257wsm?257wby? Will this be a SA or LA build?

The 25-06 is you answer. If you ever use one on deer size game you won't ever look for another caliber. It kills with waaaaay more authority than you would ever think. 99% of the deer I have shot with one, and that is way over 100, have dropped in their tracks. 117 Sierra at 3000 fps is a hammer.

Jake,

The 6.5-284 would be very cool. 8)

Jake -

I have both the .260 & 7-08 in my safe, both exactly the same platform short of the .260 having a one inch longer tube. My 7-08 is a tack driver and my safe queen, however I'd take the .260 elk hunting hands down before my 7-08.

If you want a little more than the .260 the 6.5-284 would be a great round - screw a fluted magnum contour on that model 7 and let it rip ?
If you just want something different and in the .260 realm look at the 6.5X47 Lapua.

Since it's a matter of esthetics, my plans always take me to the BIG gun shop and the rifle range to check guns out in person. It sound like many of the calibers would work so it's "what grabs you". I have a Tikka T3 Lite and 3300+ fps. is amazing from a 6 pound rifle. I have a 270 Wby that I'm trying to get to shoot faster but based on my results it won't be by a whole lot. That 257 Wby. ultralight Pop has is pretty nice 8) Have fun.

Really hard to beat the 270WSM as a total package of rifle/cartridge. Packs alot of juice and doesn't need a 24" tube. Scotty
