So I drove over to hells canyon today to shoot some chukar. 17 degrees and snow all the way to the river. Climbed up hill for an hour crossed to a south slope with some exposed grass. Molly went on point and I climbed out on a ledge to get a shot and fell off. Instant waves of nausea, hurt like hell, figured I was in trouble. Dressed to keep warm while climbing hard, not dressed to survive. Unable to contact my group on the radio.
15 minutes later I'm damn cold. I'm able to stand but the leg hurts like hell. Nothing for a splint so I pull the barrel of my Benelli and lash it to my leg. Took me three hours to work my way down to the road, did finally make radio contact. We all ended up at the road about the same time.
Turns out the leg is not broken but badly bruised, femur as well.
The bead is gone from the Benelli, bluing is scuffed up pretty bad, otherwise ok.
I hate chukars.

And that, is typical chukar country out here. Hardest doggone bird hunting I've ever done!

Hope you heal up well, and soon. Good work, getting out of there!

Don, I glad you made it out with out serious injury. Though we take it for granted hunting is one of the most dangerous sports out there. It's amazing what we can do when our survival instincts kick in. The Benelli can be repaired or replaced your life is the only one you have and most of us don't get a second chance. Also the older we get the more deadlier those falls get. A simple slip and fall in the back yard can become life threatening quickly when we are alone. It was good you were hunting with friends who could assist you. My prayers are with you for a full and speedy recovery.

Glad you made it to the road and were able to get medical help. I do trust you will heal quickly. A fall like that is nothing to ignore.

Glad your okay! Quick thinking on your part with the gun barrel. Could have ended much worse.

Don= 0

Chukar= 1

And no matter how difficult the hunting, it will usually end up this score.

All the best with the healing,

Jim

Happy to hear that you are OK. Easier to fix or repair the barrel than your leg.
Wishing you a speedy recovery.

Glad to hear you are all right. I used to use the Canyon for early season hiking under the guise of prepping for elk. I couldn't hit a flying basketball with a shotgun so I gave up. Its really nasty country, glad to hear you made it out OK, how long for recovery ?

Going to be sore for a while, doc said I probably should see a physical therapist to focus on repairing the muscle. No more hells canyon trips this year. Getting old sucks, 10 years ago I don't think I would have fallen.
Any way thanks for the well wishes.

Growing old ain't for cowards, that's for sure. Pray you have a full and speedy recovery.

Don, glad that you are on the mend... As painful as the leg is, it could have been much worse with a head or more serious injury... As has been said, getting old is not for sissies. God helps us over the bumps in the road of life.

Don I am sure glad you were able to make it back out & get the help you needed. I have to agree with you regarding the aging process, I slipped while ice fishing on Boxing Day and I am still whining with a stiff back :evil:.
I am sure you will be up and add it again real soon.

Blessings,
Dan

Just started running on it. There is a knot in the muscle I'm working on. Probably about 80% strength climbing the hills. Doc warned me to take it easy, for once it my life I'm following direction.

Don, glad to hear your recovering from your fall. Sometimes it takes a near death incident to open our eyes to see the light. And then again some of us never do.
