Closest rifle shot on game?

I have killed several elk and a few deer under 20 yards. The 06 or 300 WM are very effective at that distance. My closest ever, was a 5 point bull playing possum. He was on his feet, on my side of the 5 yard line. It works best however if you "open" both eyes. I passed on a cougar inside of 30 feet one day and a fox inches away. I have a picture somewhere, of a young Pine Martin sitting on the ground next to my boot. I don't believe it had ever seen a human. He wandered off after a 1/2 hour or so.

Elkman = king of understatement.

2 yards straight on with white tail buck coming in to grunt call in the fog with factory federal 150 303 British . The bullet hit so hard drop all legs went straight out from underneath him, heart was all mush and twice the size and nothing but pepper fragments of bullet, no exit. I was a good hunt.

My first mountain goat was shot at 15 yards with a 7 Rem Mag, but have also taken a whitetail at 15 yards with a 7 STW.

Does a sledge hammer throw from a tractor seat count when you have a songdog walking beside the moving tractor?
Keith

About 5 feet...black bear...was gonna let him pass (kinda small), but he insisted.

Edit: left out the rifle....Marlin 30-30

Did you shout "BANG!" as you released the hammer?

Does hitting a flying Blue Grouse with a "rock" count? I have only done that once, have killed a couple by throwing an axe but they were sitting.

Maybe Blkram will tell how he killed a ruffed grouse with a rock only to be chased by a sharptail lover as we drove furiously to ascape the maddened hen. He just doesn't like those ruffies breeding with sharptails.

Shot a Racoon at about 2 inches from barrel. Antelope 30 yds. Coyote about 1 ft. Most Deer I have shot in Iowa between 25 & 60 yds better to shoot one undistured & not running, even though I have had them as close a 5 ft. Bagged a Rabbit at about 6 ft with 12ga & 3 inch Mag looked liked his head was chopped off with axe & was gone. Pheasant shot about 4 ft from barrel on rise in neck.

Hunting near Jubile lake when I was 13. Some one jumped a herd of elk up hill of me a couple of hundred yards. I heard them coming and realized they were coming right to me on the trail I was using. I stepped off the trail, behind a big fir tree and the elk started.streaming past. I could have reached out and touched some of them. A rag horn 5 point came by and some how I moved enough to get off a shot. I don't think I did more than point the.rifle. I still use that rifle every year for deer, the antlers serve as a hat rack.

Whitetail buck in northern Idaho at about 12' with my 7mm rem mag. 154 gr. Hornady spire point. Shot him while still hunting in a drizzle rain storm. Here is a poor picture of him.ImageUploadedByTapatalk1392266292.423115.jpg

20 yrds spike elk, 35 yrds spike elk, 19 paces blackbear and 20 yards blackbear,-al 35 whelen. several blacktail deer between 20 and 40 yards- 35 whelen, 30-30, 6.5x52 carcano. a big doe at 15 yrds w a 22 hornet. My furthest kill was 85 yards with a muzzleloader 50 cal - nice blacktailbuck

Cool. You don't even need a scope!

Congrats on some great short-range success!

A smallish 8 pt at 12 yds. Funny thing was that my rifle barrel was over the back of a doe at the time.

Long

A whitetail doe at 12' saw the hole all the way thru her in the scope. Use a 270 win 150 Hor sp/way to much IMr4831 but the best part was my son about 6yrs old got to come out to the wood and help find it. I showed him the blood trail and he followed it down and found it. He was excited till he saw that it was field dressed. He turned and you already found this one Dad!! Thack for making remember this time. Clint

Clint,

Welcome aboard. It is always a delight to see new names popping up.
