I'm hunting CO this Fall as a non-resident and the rules around requiring a hunter safety card are a bit unclear to me. I know I need to present a legible hunter safety card when I buy my license but what is not clear is what other states programs they will accept. The website says "may" accept other cards but as someone who writes Terms and Conditions for a living, there is a BIG difference between MAY and WILL. Am I overthinking this? Any experience as a non-resident buying an OTC tag with any problems with their HS card?

I believe CO requires a hunter safety certificate for anyone born after Jan 1, 1969.
I hunted elk and mule deer in CO in 2012. I showed the lady at the sporting goods shop my hunter safety certificate and bought my tags.
Best of luck on your upcoming hunt.

I've hunted CO a fair amount never had a problem with my PA hunter safety card . I've bought CO license in person at the walmart store , and I've bought licenses through the draw , never a problem . I "THINK" when I went through the draw , I had to check a box or something like that , swearing I have a hunter safety card . the last time I was there hunting , I stopped in a game and fish office and showed my card to an officer , she took it and put a copy of it on record for me . I thought having it on record in CO could help me when applying in other states . it seems to me this data is shared between states .

be sure to take your card with you , I've heard , or read , about guys taking a CO safety course while they are out there before being allowed to purchase their license . sitting in the classroom for a day or two , makes for a short hunt .

Only hunted there twice in the last 10 years. I had no problem using Oregons on line hunter safety card. Have a great hunt.

Jim, My first hunt in Colorado was 1999 and the person behind the counter asked for my Driver's license. She checked my DOB and said "you're good to go" My hunting buddy who was considerably younger than me had to show his Florida certificate (which was valid in Colorado) He was ok'd also. Just so you know the Florida fees have really changed over the years.

My understanding is that hunter ed from any state is acceptable. It took mine from many, many moons ago and my brother's from a different state.

As a side note, I found their Parks and Wildlife people very helpful and accommodating. I strongly suggest calling them before your hunt to clarify any questions you may have.

Thanks everyone. Looks like I can purchase it online a month or so beforehand and get it out of the way so I am not sweating arriving in CO the day before the hunt in time to buy it.
