I'm working on reloading for a friend of mines .270 he hasn't had much time and we have a cow elk hunt the first of nov. so any way he brings me his rifle brass bullets 130 AB's dies and powder. I prep prime find the lands make a dummy round with an OAL of 3.393. When I go to load up a couple he wants to test with H-4831sc the low end charge fills up the shell to the top of the shoulder it doesn't seem like much space left in there. Is this normal for .270 I havn't seen this while reloading for my other calibers. I used a rl-22 charge from an older Nosler manuel at 57g and it seemed kinda maxed out also. I'm new to alot of this so sorry if I'm just being a little paranoid but I havn't seen a low end charge max out a shell like this yet.

At full charge, you will possibly have a slightly compressed load with H4831SC. It is not a danger, just a full case. I assume you began with a 55 grain load and intend to work up to a maximum charge of 59 grains as per the Nosler Guide No. 6? A 57 grain charge of RL22 is near max according to the current Nosler Guide. I'd recommend dropping back to 54 grains and working up to 58 grains as a maximum charge.

And make sure your on the 270 win page, and not the 270 wsm page. I had a friend call me to double check a load of imr 4350, for his kids 270 his #'s and mine were off quite a bit, I finally asked him are you on the right page and what book are you using, Then I got the ol hum' I'm on the short mag page...LOL good thing he double checked and he has now book marked the right pages. I've heard of guys getting weatherby data and standard data mixed up aswell. not good.

Guilty of this myself.......

Used 300 Bee data in a 300 Win Mag.

You have been given good advise. RL 22 and H4831 are both excellent powders for the 270 Win.
Keep us posted on the load development.

This is my load for 130 AB: 60 gr of H4831sc, CCI BR2 or GM210 Federal Large Rifle primer.
Brass Nosler. Oal 3.295. Velocity about 3000 FPS.
RL-22 works better for me with 150 PT. 58 gr. GM215 Magnum Primer, It is hot load but no pressure signs in my rifle 22 inch. Velocity 2850 fps.

Thanks for the advice I'm going to have to stick with the rl-22 I don't have enough H-4831 on hand to load up any more than a few test shells. Stuck at work for a couple days then its off to the range Monday. I'll try and post up results

I think you'll do good with RL22. It is one of my favorites for alot of cartridges. Scotty

You might want to check your scale. I don't think that 57 grains of RL-22 should be filling a case. I believe my load with 60.5 gr. only fills the case to right around the top of the shoulder.

I do think you'll be happy with the velocity that RL-22 gives you. Scotty is right, it's a good powder and really gets the bullets moving. I started with the powder in a .300 (thanks in part to Scotty's recommendation) and then used it in my .270.

Now I'm thinking that, after hunting season, I'm going to rework my .280 load with RL-22. I'm not sure my 22" barrel will be enough to make significant gains over my IMR4350 load though.

Agree with Rovert. 57 grains of H4831 0r RL-22 should not be up to the bottom of the neck with rem. or ww cases.

So I finally headed to the range today to try the loads I'm making for my buddies .270 and I was also going to shoot my 7mag and a 30-06 I just did my first barrel swap on. When I was getting set up I pulled out the box of .270 shells it opened up unexpectedly and all the shells fell to the ground in a big pile I wasnt able to tell the difference between most of the shells. I gave them a shake test and was able to find three that had no shake to them I figured these were the highest load at 58 and seperated them out and just shot the rest all together.

...I buy a pack of colored Sharpies when they're on sale as "school supplies", & color my primers black, purple, blue, green, yellow, orange, red, "coolest to hottest"...

Yeah I have seen this a lot with 270's actually. A friend of mine years ago wanted me to load 61 grs of H4831 under a Speer 130gr Boat tail for a long range deer load and certain cases wouldnt take all of the powder because of the way I was pouring the powder into the funnel. When I poured slow at an angle into the funnel and backed the load off to 60 grs, it all went together better. And he shot lots of deer with that load, no problems at all. Good luck to you!

I use H4851 sc ( short cut ) 60.5 gr. with 130 AB and they shoot well. Primer GM210, OAL.3.285
Velocity is about 3050 fps average with 22.5 tube. New load for me and shoots even better then the old one. It take time to get it done right.

Never had much of a problem getting all that 4831 into a .270 case. I used an 8" drop tube and poured the powder from the pan nice and slow, My hand holding the tube would also be tapping with my finger similar to playing a flute. That's the method I use anytime I'm loading one of those type powders that have kernals resembling redwood logs.

This is so strange...I've neither read nor replied to any of your posts until now, yet I've rubbed off on you already. Sorry to have inflicted this upon you!

The last time I shot a factory rifle it was a Remington 700 in .270 Win. That thing would shoot 55gr of IMR 4350 with 130gr Partitions in 1/2".
