Last week at the end of the day for chuckles we put a 3/8" steel spinner at 100 yds to see what would happen. I kind of expected the 22-250 to penetrate, but not the 338-200s.

The 22-250 Ackley was using the Hornady 53 gr HP Match @ 3950fps. Only one shot. The spalling, if that's the correct term, front & rear is impressive & the hole is c. .400" all the way through.

The 338-06 Ackley was using Speer 200 Sptzers with new brass for a fireforming load at 2735fps. The spalling is again much more than expected with a soft point expanding bullet. Hole diameter is about 1/2" all the way though. The 3 close to center were my shots & my buddy shot the 2 closer to the edge which may show the different point of impact with different gun handling. None of the projectiles were found.

Guessing this is mild steel. Some AR5000 is on the way for the future.

Yup.

Years ago when I was on SWAT another team-member set up our training scenario on a big chunk of land.

I was the sniper team leader. The two of us with our .308's were supposed to start the engagement by shooting a pair of steel targets that had been placed out in front of us - I forget the range - nothing particularly challenging, likely under 200 yards. Then when we shot the rest of the team was supposed to "assault" the position... While we kept firing with our bolt action 308's.

The two shots rang out. Then the 308 fire stopped.... "Why aren't you continuing to fire?" came across the radio. "There are no targets anymore..."

Okay... That was digested and the "assault" commenced.

My partner and I were the only ones who weren't surprised when we all took a look at the mild steel pistol targets that had not only been completely penetrated, but also disassembled by the two rifle shots.

Our ammo was Federal Gold Medal Match, with 168 gr Sierra HPBT bullets.

Rifles are powerful things and deal rather easily with mild steel.
