What time of day have you had the best luck hunting coyotes?

I've read that early morning and/or late afternoon is the best time(s), I was wondering you have found?

Plan on giving it a try this weekend.

Thanks!

Right at sunrise and/or sunset. I have quite a few friends that have great luck at night time if legal in your area.

If the coyotes are hungry you can call them in at anytime though. I have called one in at 11:00a.m. while turkey hunting. If you have really cold temps (below freezing) for a sustained time it is easier to call them in during daylight hours. They have to eat more often due to the freezing temps.

Most of the yotes I have shot are at night with a shotgun and a red light.
Early morning/late afternoon can also productive.

I have taken more coyotes on my first and second stands of the day at sunrise. The second best has been the last stand before sunset. If it is cold you can call them all day long.

At night.........well you just keep calling until you can't stay awake. We usually hunt all night and stop about 45 minutes after sunrise. Then we crash..........

Good Hunting,

Bob

I agree, just after sunrise and before sunset. I've killed 75% of my coyotes during these times.

Would you guys believe in mid day while shooting prairie dogs?

Of course! I've shot many in mid-day. Are you saying that is the time you've shot most of your coyotes? That is pretty cool!

You keep ringing the dinner bell and the yotes come in for a free lunch.

flyfish,
I have to agree with most of the above. Are you going out driving around or calling?
When we call, we like to leave the truck just a hair before sun up to go out and get set up. That way we can also listen for them howling and gives us a good indication on which way to go.
These critters are extremely smart and can see VERY well !

We will go out in the woods, find a place where we can see aways and call.
We know there are coyotes there, we just hope they will come into our call. Two of us got coyotes while deer hunting this year. The other guy did get a chance to get his gun up. Like you said, they have good eye sight and ar wary.

I hunt Central California where coyote numbers are very high and the land is very flat and very open. Much different than VT. Although I've been coyote hunting for the better part of 15 years, I recently got into howling. What I did not expect was coyotes to come into the howl unannounced. The last few I've called, I used the rabbit distress for 5-10 minutes, howled, and stayed on the rabbit distress. Next thing I know, coyote is coming in. I figured they would answer, then come in. That has not been the case for me. You may want to mix up the rabbit distress with a howl or two. Or replace the rabbit with a fawn distress. I've seen coyotes hang up at 500-600 yards while listening to the rabbit call, then I'll howl and they start working their way in. They get curious.

Thanks, that's some great info. I never thought about the fawn distress call but that's really a good idea.

Looks like our hunt will be delayed. One of the guys I was going with lost his father yesterday.
