Dedicated lightweight rifle?

My dedicated light rifle is a .240 Weatherby in a MK 5 ultra light weight at 5 3/4 pounds with a VX3 4-14 on top. Doesn't feel much different than carrying or shooting a .22.

Does anyone have one for those really hard to get places?
Most rifles go between 7.5-8 lbs sans scope. What say you?

Most generally, I think of those hard to get places, more as heavy cover or timber. A short barreled TC Encore works for me. If it's hard traversing mountain cayon terrain, those longer shots that might be the norm, it would suffice nicely. Being a single shot, I still don't feel handicapped. But losing the receiver weight and length is nice. And without having the heft of a short barreled No.1.

My husband has a Model 10 Dakota, 24" barrel, with a 1 x 9 twist in a 280 with a Swaro Z6 on it that weighs just a tad over 7. He shoots 140 gr woodleighs and uses it for small plains game.

Drooling! Though I think I might choose a little bit more petite scope, like a Z3 3.5-10x42 (And, truth be told, I would like a Dakota 10 7x65R, just to be a little more oddball!)

+1, that Model 10 would be nice. BK, would you want a single or double barrel, if funds were not an issue and I am not saying that they are for you, but they would be for me.

Onesonek

I think of the hard to get places as high in the mountains. In very thick timber I like the lever actions, preferably the 45/70. I agree with your thoughts on using a single shot with the short barrel and no receiver weight in the mountains. Do you like the Encore over the Dakota, Model 10. The Dakota, sans scope would be about 6 1/2 #. Is the Encore even lighter ?

I just looked it up and it looks like the Encore might be around 7 1/2 #. But we dont have one so I am not sure about that

Being a Model 70 fan, I have always coveted the Dakota rifles. Most likely, I will never own one but the certainly are the epitome of a both beautiful and practical rifle in my humble opinion for hunting anywhere in the world.

I've lusted after a Dakota 76 "Traveller" in '06 since I first laid eyes on one.

Been saving money slowly to fund one but they're going up faster than I can save!

I am another who has lusted after a Dakota. I figured as long as I was dreaming, dream big

I have always wanted a 76 African ( 375 H/H ) and a model 10 ( 300 H/H ), but to date it has just remained a dream.

But I keep buying lottery tickets

I see Hodgeman would like his in an 06. BK in a 7 x 65R , which would be pretty cool

charlie what caliber would you order ?

I received a bonus one time when reenlisted back in 2000. I had a little extra money and was going to order a 76 in 300 Win Mag. Back then they weren't totally crazily priced but I bought a truck instead. Worst decision I ever made, in regards to rifles. I wished I could go back in time cause Dakota makes some very awesome rifles!

Yeah...that truck is likely worthless now and the Dakota would have doubled in value!

Without a doubt. I know, I regret it. Ah well. Ill figure it out one of these days!

I would probably buy a .300 H&H

Oh, they definitely are for me, too. That's why I have a 700 SPS in 7-08 rather that a No. 10 in 7x65R...
