Donor Rifle

Congratulations TD. I would be interested to hear how it turns out, rebore or rebarrel.

I have an old pushfeed M70 30-06 that I wanted to rebarrel to a 35 Whelen and a local gunsmith talk me out of it. He suggested a 30 Gibbs or a 338-06. Now after reading this Forum for the last several months a have the Whelen bug again, thanks.

I'm looking at reboring the barrel for now, depends on what I here from others how theirs shoot. I do like Douglas barrels though.

Oh and thanks everyone for the well wishes, there will be plenty of pics and stories along the way.

Remember DO NOT SHOOT the DONOR!!! As shooting it will more enlikely cause you to buy another rifle for the project. Hence why all of my donors are 270's I don't have dies or brass laying around for one and I already have a 280!

Yes the 30-06 is one of my favorite rounds but I don't think I have to worry about it because my Ruger 77 is my go to rifle for now. That mite change when the Whelen gets done. :)

I'm glad you didn't settle for the rifle we were talking about. I think you'll like the M70 much better.

Yup it would take an awful lot for me to change my mind the 300Wby hasn't been able to. The worse it could do would have me have the Ruger bored out since all the stock work has been done on it but dang it does everything I want it to so I don't see that as an option or it would have already been done.

The Winchester M70 is on it's way to my FFL. When I get it I'll post some before and after pics as the build progresses.

Sounds like a deal, Rodger. Watching the progress will be fun; looking forward to your reports.

I see what everyone is saying and will probably look in a different direction than the 783. The Winchester 670 is an option I hadn't thought of but that is why I asked for your thoughts.

I just got done getting a lightweight 270 built off a 670. I used:

Pac-Nor #3 fluted 24" stainless barrel
Bell & Carlson aluminum bedded lightweight stock
Pacific Tool and Gauge aluminum bottom metal
Talley rings & bases (lightweight aluminum)
Leupold VXIII 4.5-14x40 with VH reticle and CDS added

With sling & ammo it weighs right at 8.5lbs, worked great for my elk hunt this fall. Figured I might have some ideas here you can use.

Well I just received about the ugliest Winchester M70 I have ever seen. It has the black plastic stock with the W in the checkering on the forearm and is mat black metal finished.
It is control feed but not your Mauser style extractor. I guess its a push control feed style since the bottom of the bolt face is machined to allow the rim to slide up under the extractor. I'll post some pics when I get them loaded on my computer.

Sounds like the perfect donor. The controlled push feed should feed really slick, looking forward to the pictures.

Ugly is as ugly does. I'm looking forward to the transformation of this ugly duckling into a creature of beauty. That is what we do with donors--we transmogrify them.

So what will it be a Remchester or a Winchester since it has the controled push feed bolt?

Better a Remchester, I suppose, than a Winchington.

Well I'm almost ashamed to post these but here's the Ugly Duckling.

Certainly nothing to be ashamed that is a great donor. A different stock could be added later if you like and make it look quite different. Congrats on getting the first part of the project in your hands.

So the hunt is on. Where can I get a trigger guard magazine floor plate for a M70 for when I change stocks?
It was made some time between 1992 and 1970 from what I've read. I had found a web page to look up the serial number but can't find it now.

I would call Winchester directly and speak with their parts department. They have been very good to me. It may take a minute or to to get them on the hook, but once you are there, they have been very helpful and the prices are reasonable from all I can tell..

That's a great looking donor and like Gerry said, it should be an excellent feeding rifle. Heck, that is a very good looking donor to my eyes.

Thanks gerry
I actually have 2 pieces of the puzzle since I have a 2-10x40 Minox to go on top of it all I need is a set of Tally rings and send it off for re-boring and then I'll look for a stock.
