Guys,
I realize that this may get a biased result, but i would like to get some information on ETIP vs Barnes X for 257, 7mm and .300
thanks,
hardpan

Might take a bit - the E-tip is so new, most of us don't have field experience with them.

I have used the Barnes TSX, and can say it's the first Barnes bullet that really worked for me. Good accuracy, very lethal results on game. Despite being better about copper-fouling than the earlier X bullets, the soft copper TSX still fouls rough factory barrels pretty significantly.

Am looking forward to trying the E-Tip myself one of these days. Suspect it will do away with the copper-fouling issue.

Regards, Guy

JD you beat me to it.

What info are you looking for?

Accuracy, pressures, expansion, penetration (not an issue) etc?

Looking for accuracy in magnums, specifically weatherbys. but, mainly accuracy with fairly fast velocities.
thanks
Hardpan.

Don't know if you guys get Barnes Newsletter that is e-mailed to people who sign up but.....they just took a slam at the e-tip and ballistic coefficient. Barnes pretty much said their coeficient is correct and the e-tip is optimistic. To prove it they loaded up some very accurate barnes loads and some very inaccurate loads for the e-tip and then measured the bc at the target. Well when a bullet is wobbling so bad it shoots a 5" group it is gonna have a lousy bc which is how they played the game. Bottom line is in their report whichever bullet was more accurate had the best bc.

Maybe it's time for me to load up some E-tips on my Wilson BR dies and shoot them through my .308 Krieger... Then compare them with Barnes TSX bullets shot though some junker .308 with 10,000 rounds through the barrel?

I like TSX's just fine, and haven't even tried an e-tip yet - but let's compare apples to apples - good loads for both!

Regards, Guy

For correct scientific data all variables must be as identical as possible.

Okay - I'll get some of each and shoot them both from the Krieger barrel...

Sheesh... Killjoy...

The 7mm 150 gr E-Tip shoots just fine in my 280 AI. SHor this group this afternoon at 100 yds. Group measures .300" c/c.

Outstanding group, very nice, what were the velocities or estimated velocities. It will be good to hear from you this hunting season and see the results you have on game. Once again very nice group and can I assume you are shooting a Nosler rifle? If not what make of rifle?.

PS - Very nice picture :)

bullet,

Velocity is running 2950 fps. Rifle is a M700 w/ a blueprinted action,, Tubb recoil lug, Hart #5 fluted 24" barrel, pillar bedded in a Remington LSS stock.
The scope in this picture is a Mark 4 4.5x14 but the rifle is now wearing a Vari X III 2.5x8 with M1 dials.

I'm impressed, Jim. I was looking over your notes and can't read the seating distance from the lands. It looks like it could say .9"? That seems long, but then again, if you're getting accuracy like that, I'm going to start trying that in my 270Wby with the 130gr E-Tips. I haven't had good results so far with them, but my loading is limited to a couple of combinations so far, so not exhaustive by any stretch.

I'd love to accelerate my learning curve by using your experience. Any tips?

I would bet that Nosler already has most if not all the data comparing TTSX, TSX vs the E-Tip.

What say you, Nosler?

I have very limited experience with both the E-Tip and the Barnes Bullets. However....

Years ago I tried the Original X bullet in my .25-06 and just flat could not get it to shoot. I then tried the "nex" X Boatail. Same result. I gave up on Barnes at that point.

I've been shooting the E-Tip out of my .300 Win Mag only at paper. I did happen to find 2 expanded E-Tips in the dirt, they look great, but I know, they were just in the dirt. I'm getting right at 3,000fps with the 180gr E-Tip and groups right around an inch. One I weighed. This bullet was found in the dirt about 200 yards from where it was shot ended up being 176.5 grains.

My buddy is shooting them out of his 7mm-08 (the 140grain E-Tip). Meciocre velocity, 2,650fps if I remember right. I found one of his bullets beautifully expanded in the dirt as well.

Yesterday while we were deer hunting, he ended up shooting a coyote right at about 200 yards, braodside with the 7mm-08 and the 140gr E-Tip. I've taken photos of the coyote and the exit hole and will post when I figure out how. Seemed the bullet expanded very well on such a small animal.

He also loaded the 140gr E-Tips in a 7mm Mag he has. He shot a 3 shot group averaging around 2,950fps and a 3/4 inch group. That group equals the best group he has ever shot with that rifle. He'd basically given up on the 7 Mag because it was not much of a shooter. Now he is interested again.

When somebody gets a chance walk me through posting photos like I'm a 2 year old. Can't seem to get it done.

140GR E Tip news to me????....The 30 cal 150gr E Tip shoots great in my 300...They work awesome on game..It's all my 300 Win will shoot from here on in.

7mm 150gr bullets will get a spin this spring..Too busy hunting to do any load work ups..

dubyam,

I'm .100" off the lands. I tried .040", .050", .060", and .080"" off the lands and groups from 1.25" to .9". Nothing that great when I know what this rifle will do but .100" off the lands hit the jackpot. Plenty good for my hunting needs.
