E-Tips or TTSX?

I'm interested in either one of these for my 7mm Express ( .280) I can get the 150 ABLR/154 SST to 2900 with R22 and the Speer 145BT to 2950 with IMR 4350. I get the 168 ABLR(R22) and my most accurate 160PT(imr 4350) to 2750... Since it seems to provide better speed with the 150's or so, I'd like to have a good load with either just for elk. I have a lot of experience with Barnes and I have always had good results with the TSX/TTSX. I like the looks of it but I see the Etip has no relief grooves. Is it a "sticky" bullet like the older Barnes X or Scirocco? I am after all the weight I can shoot the fastest, but I'm afraid to try the 160 TSX because of this rifes history. Now, that 168 ABLR is a flat shooter even at 2750, but I'm not sure it would work for a hard angling shot on elk or break shoulders up close. Am I overthinking this one? My main elk rifle is my Whelen AI, but its good to have a spare. Long way around to ask if the E Tips are as easy to get to shoot fast/well as the TSX/TTSX? Thanks. BTW, I saw a Kimber Montana at the LGS in .280 Ackley! OMG...my brain is pondering "any" excuse/reason to trade up, lol.

In my experience, the E-Tip works as well or better than the TSX. I have taken several head of game with E-Tip bullets; they have performed quite well for me.

I took the advice of several friends far more 'Elk' experienced than I, and went with the 140 AB. No regrets. You should be able to break the 3K barrier without too much fuss. And Yes, it will hold up, and it will penetrate.

I have no experience with the TTSX but quite a bit with the 90 gr. E-tip in my son's 6mm Remington. They penetrate extremely well and keep a high proportion of their weight. On game and in water jug tests they have been pretty impressive.

Now if you go with the Accubonds I'm sure you will be very satisfied with them also as they really have held together and penetrated very well also. Anything from the 140 to 160 weights you have been shooting will all work. I foolishly sold my .280 Remington several years ago, but it was not because it was not a fabulous cartridge. That thing is pretty darn fantastic in my opinion and one of the best all around cartridges out there. I shot several elk, deer, and antelope with it and it always works. I used 140 gr. Partitions in mine. Find one that your rifle really likes and go hunting.

When they were initially released I thought they & the GMX would be too hard due to their harder material compared to the solid copper of the Barnes. The reports I've seen from credible sources suggest that hasn't been the case, so as with any compare/contrast exercise with two good choice, I'd let the rifle decide.

139 GMX, 140 TTSX, 145 LRX, 150 TTSX, or 150 ETip would all be on the docket if I were you.

Being that the GMX needs a faster velocity than the TSX or TTSX I'd look elsewhere. I don't know enough about the E Tip to have an opinion but I've sworn off the GMX and swear by the TSX and TTSX.

Thanks guys, saw some Barnes 145 LRTTSX this afternoon. May give them a try later.

I haven't worked with the TTSX, but the 150 E Tips are really accurate in my 280 with RL22. I had no issues going up to 56.0 grains, which is the max load in Nosler 7.

The 130 E-Tip is my standard hunting load in the 270 WSM. It has accounted for several moose, elk, mule deer and whitetail deer so far. All died pretty dramatically and convincingly.

I decided to just stick with the loads I have for now. Just the other day I got into another deal, my smith is going to screw a factory 26" 7mm Rem mag barrel into a Mod 700 standard ( that he converted to magnum bolt face via opening the bolt face and set it up with an M16 extractor, ala Sako style) it should get those 150/168 ABLRs and the 160 Partition where I want speedwise. I don't/haven't taken an unwounded animal past 370 or so, though I know where my rifles hit out to 500 in case I wound something. My normal/average range out here ( Utah/WY) is around 250 and I like how hard the magnums hit critters, no doubt. I haven't had a magnum for about 2 yrs ( sold a custom 7mm RUM, try finding brass for it now!) I think I will experiment with the 150 Etip in this 7 mag. I'm thinking 3200 or close with 150 anythings out of a 26" should be doable. Only 7 Remags I've had over the years were all (3) 24" Mod 700s. I'm itching to see how a 26 does. My 7 Rum had a 25" bbl, it could have used more really. The 2 7mm STWS had 26" barrels ( another hard to find case now too!) I like being able to use factory loads too, and the 7 Rem Mag is all over the place out here, heck, always has been! Thanks guys.

I think you'll do really well with the 150 ET's. I would think you'd get 3200 pretty easily, or at least danged close..

Thanks Pard! I'm thinking a 150 ETip will shoot through just about anything!

I really am impressed with the E-tip. My son has taken several antelope, deer, and a large cow with his 6mm Remington and the 90 gr. E-tip. On his cow she was broadside at 350 yards and he put it tight behind her right shoulder and it went through and exited out the center of her left shoulder. She only went 25 yards and tipped over. Expansion even at long distances has been good. The E-tip in this pictures does not look like it expanded much, but if you look at it from the top, it has. These were all out of the 6mm Remington at 400 yards. 100 gr. Partition 3140 fps, 90 gr. AccuBond 3200+, and the 90 gr. E-tip 3300 fps. Shot into water jugs.
