I see these in midway for $40.

I am curious as to how good they really are.

I am looking to put them on my LR rigs, 338 EDGE and 7 RM, both are braked.

Thing that worrys me is that they are aluminum. All the other ones, badger, NF, leatherwood, etc..are all made of steel. I dont care about weight, I want them to be durable and last...

What do you think, yay or nay??

Brownells been selling Alum Picatinny bases for some time they run around $50 also make the same in steel double the cost and they give no MOA. EGW doesn't offer MOA.

The Badgers I use gave 20MOA Near Mfg gives 25MOA for about the same cost and Lightforce has one for Rem actions that give 40MOA.

I used the Badger 30mm rings and got the 1" reducers worth the money.

Myself I selected Badger just want one system to deal with and the other side if you ever decide to sell you get most of your money back.

Pretty sure EGW offers 20 MOA bases as well as bases with no MOA.

Dont really wanna shell out $200 or more for 2 bases if I dont have to.

I know Badger, NF, Seekins, etc will bring a better resale value, but I'm not looking to sell once I buy them either.

Remmy

I have no actual experience with MOA bases but I would think you would want steel because it is harder/tougher than aluminum.

JD338

Thats kinda what I'm thinking as well Jim.

Could probly get away with it on my 7 RM since it kicks about like a 22-250, but I'm thinking I need the steel for my 338 EDGE with those 300's. Its still got a wee bit of recoil

As much as I dont like Burris, I'm thinking of going with there 6 screw extreme tactical rings for both as well...Dont look to bad, they are aluminum as well tho, not to bad a price.

Just dont know about the whole aluminum thing on the EDGE.

Yes they make two types but the ones you asked about don't. You can get on EGW site and order from them.

As to which is best hard to say. When I build my LR rifle I plan on using Badger system so I never shopped that around and had the base installed by gunsmith made sure fit right.

I have an EGW 20 MOA on my 300 RUM. It is steel, not alluminum and much less expensive than a Ken Ferrel base. Works well for me. I was recommended to get this base by a long ranger.

I went to there site (EGW) and didn't find a steel 20 MOA base. Maybe I need to call and talk to them.

If they have a steel 20 MOA base, consider it a done deal on my end. Untill then, I'm still up in the air on whether or not to go with the aluminum 20 MOA base for the EDGE.

Only ones in midway reguardless of 20 MOA or not, are all aluminum...

I must be missing something somewhere along the lines...

This is probably going way off the deep end, but remember the two will have a different expansion / shrinkage rate between the base and action......... Alum will contract / expand at a different rate.

A cold 20 deg below morning and 600+ yrd shot on a monster bull ??

Just thinking outside the box........

You're absolutely correct Mark. What I found out from using aluminum bases was that, you have to re-torque it from time to time. It has a tendency to loosen up on it's own.

I dont hunt much below zero, just doesn't get that cold around here, however that pretty much seals the deal for me, dont think I"m going with the EGW.

I"m just going to save up a bit and go with either the MK4 or NF 20 MOA base/rings.

Thanks for the help guys.

I bought one for my 300 RUM Remington CDL. Looks great so far. Still new in the box since rifle is still on lay-away.

You should be good to go with the Mark 4 or NF.

POP,

Can't wait to see what kind of loads you come up with on your new 300RUM

The loads are ready to go. They are loaded in painstakingly prepped brass. I just do not want to get another Remington failure like my last 3 have been.

Well I paid of my 300 RUM CDL and mounted the 20 MOA EGW. warne rings and Leupy 4.5x14x40mm LR with the M1 dials.
I can tell you it looks very very robust and well made. I would not doubt its durability at all.
Remember back in the 60;s how many cape Buffalo and Elephants have been shot with 458's, Wbies and 375's . Most of the hunters used Weaver aluminum bases and rings (according to Ken Waters). He said they were dependable.
BTW has anyone been able to break weaver aluminum bases, or seen them ever come apart?

My only worry is after I bore sighted the scope I almost had to bottom out the adjustments on the leupy. I have maybe 10 clicks left. I hope I can sight it at 200 yards (zero) without bottoming it all the way!!!!!!!!!
Maybe I should have gone with 15 MOA base .......

This is the one.

This high-quality elevated Picatinny-style base has 20 MOA built into it to allow zeroing at long distances. It is constructed of aluminum and includes mounting hardware.

Yeah, that can be a problem with some 20 MOA mounts and some scopes.

Normally a 200 yard zero can be achieved.

I've mounted a few of the "tactical" type rails on SWAT rifles, target rifles and long-range hunting rifles and have been satisfied with all of them. Trying to remember now which ones I've worked with:

Badger Ord - steel - on my personal .308 precision rifle

Seekins Precision - aluminum - on a dept owned SWAT rifle, Rem LTR - very nicely made base - likely my favorite setup. Glen makes good stuff.

Warne - on a long-range competition rifle.

Some other danged aluminum setup that I got from Brownells I think on a 7mm Rem mag Sendero I had all set up for long-range hunting some years ago. Can't think of the brand at the moment.

All of them worked out well. Used flat (zero MOA) bases on the SWAT rifles as they're typically employed at closer ranges. Still able to get enough elevation to shoot 800+ yards with the little .308 Win and my 4.5-14x Leupold 1" tube scope.
