Enough Gun

It would be very cool to have matching, or nearly matching:

.25-06
.280 (AI?)
.30-06
.338-06 or .35 Whelen

That would make a real nice four-rifle hunting battery.

Or a guy could just use the .30-06 for everything....
Guy I did that and wore my 30-06 barrel out, that's why I had my 257 Roberts built on the same action. I just liked that Remington soooo much. Plus I went right out and bought another 30-06 for the heavy work.

I do like the idea of using a rifle that I shoot well and using a bullet that will maintain integrity whichever cartridge it is loaded in. Gerry is correct that the 7 mm RM is a rifle often seen when hunting grizzly, as is the 30-06 and 300 mags. Of friends that I know that have taken grizzly in the past several years, there has been a .358 for several, .30-06 for several, a .300 WSM for at least one. I had a friend who argued with me when I took a grizzly with a .356; he said that bear didn't want to live and that I was lucky. However, the rifle worked quite well to dispatch the bear smartly and quickly. That little lever gun was just about right for that particular job, working just like it had on a number of large black bears over the years. When my associate, Jason, got a draw in this area this spring, I didn't advocate that he get a bigger rifle, but that his .30-06 was more than adequate. I did advocate using a stout bullet, and he heeded my advice and we built a load with the 200 grain AccuBond. That load, consequently, will work just fine for moose, elk and mule deer this fall, as well.

Bear 30-06, 30-06 Bear, Dead Bear :!:

We don't give the plain-jane cartridges like the .30-06 and similar enough credit.

Looking at the penetration and exit wounds my son is getting from our ancient .30-06 on bear & whitetail, with mere 165 grain bullets, it's obvious the cartridge is capable of far more.

Good 165 Partitions, or 180, 200 or 220 gr Partitions, 180 or 200 gr Accubonds... Yeah buddy, the old standards really are good rifles, and to me at least, they appear to be "enough" for much larger game than most of us deer hunters experience.

Doc Mike, your .356 lever action was made for bigger game like grizzly & moose!

Each one that I own has accounted for a few head of game; all the game shot with them managed to die rather convincingly.
