Or maybe just more lies? The following is from a response my shooting buddy got for his query about the absense of powder. Take it for what you feel it's worth, or how many grains of salt you can tolerate..
Paul B.

A standard dealer can only have 300 lbs. of smokeless powder on site unless they have special storage. Each shipping company is limited to 100 lbs. of powder on a truck. I am sure you can do the math on how long it would take to replenish each store with the amount of dealers we have country wide. You can call it “Hoarding” or anything else that you want, but demand has outpaced supply 25 to 1. We sold and shipped more powder in the first 5 months of this year, than we did all of 2012. All of our powder manufacturers are running at full capacity and will hopefully catch up in the next year. We are doing all that we can to get powder out, because lets face it--that is why we are in the business. I highly recommend that you become more lenient on your powder selections. If you are running 2230 in a 223, then I would recommend using Accurate LT-32, 2015, 2200, 2460, 2495, 2520, or Ramshot TAC. Ramshot X-terminator and Accurate 2230 are the same powder, FYI; if you come across some X-Terminator. You can also check out www.gunbot.net, to notify you when a powder is in stock at certain dealers.

I would have no particular reason to doubt what Scott stated. Most fascinating response.

I don't know how much of what he said was true, but I can say I've witnessed the powder flying from the shelves. At the Sportsman's Warehouse by me, customers had a choice on shipment days... either get in line at customer service for ammo (22lr, 223, 9mm, 45 mainly) or head for the reloading aisle as powder and primers were not stashed in CS like the high demand ammo. While in line, I'd look at the line at the checkout registers and usually it was a line of guys with powders or primers or both.... or just guys sulking as they walk out the door empty handed. Demand was through the roof and is still very high.

Interesting that Xterminator and 2230 are the same powder. Good info to have. I suspect there is more overlap in the Ramshot/Accurate line, but I can't pinpoint it. Perhaps Magnum and MagPro are the same? I'm not sure.

I use to have access to the "National Fire Protection Agency" code, but I do know that there are limits as to how much powder an individual can have in their residence and how much powder a business can have. Under a certain weight, it can be left on normal shelving, above a certain amount it has to be in an approved storage container. They also state how much can be transported by an individual without an approved storage container and of course, how much commercial freight can carry, so yeah the reply you got doesn't sound like BS at all.

Why would you have reason to doubt this?
The shipping regulations are indeed fact.

Western powders gets much of their powder from Belgium. When they run out do to unprecedented demand, it takes time to get on the manufacturer's list and acquire more product.

2230 and X-Terminator have been the same since 2005. If you are going to use 2230, use NEW Accurate on-line data not older printed manuals.

Magnum and Magpro are not the same. Magpro is made in the USA while Magnum is made in Belgium.
Ramshot Enforcer and AA 4100 are the only others that I know of that are the same.

Well, I was at Sportsman's arehouse yesterday when the trck came in. No bullets, no primers, two 8 pound jugs of shotgun powder, 6 one ound bottles of one of the Viht. powders and another 6 pounds of a powder I never heard of and no data in any of the manuals. I did find two boxes of the Nosler 7MM ABLRs and they came home with me. The last two Fridays there wasn't much of a crowd, unlike the nasty feeding frenzy I saw about 6 months ago.
Now, if it would only cool down about 10 degrees, maybe I could get to doing some load work up.

...I don't doubt the manufacturers, but I wish someone could track it through the system, because it seems like it's getting moved out to the loading dock, loaded on a truck & driving off into a black hole...

Honestly the places that Seem to have the are the hike in the wall mom and pop shops. Our sw and bass pro have nothing for powder or primers. But I can hit Shootin den and they have shelves of the stuff. Rl 17-33 imr 4350, 4320, 4831, 7828, 4007, accurate powders, and a lot of hodgen. The other they even had a few boxes of 250 gr AB for 338.

For us, powder is still fairly thin but improving. There is one local mom & pop that is notorious for always having high prices. His inventory got thinner but I don't recall seeing him 100% out... then again, I don't hit his shop as often as others because of his very proud pricing.

I've had an 8 pound jug of IMR 4064 on backorder from Brownells for over six months. I haven't seen ANY locally.

I wonder what the limit is in a house. I have well over 100lbs just in 5 to 8lbs jugs and probably 30-40lbs more in 1lb'ers in addition to 5 pounds of Pyrodex. My insurance company may not like me should our house ever catch on fire.

 I don't know that I'd speak with ATF about that issue.

I have about 15 pounds of powder in my house. This is about 5 pounds more then I have when times are normal and I can buy powder when I need it. I always have at least 8 pounds of powder just one each of the various types. I also have about 10,000 primers in stock at home and this is about twice my normal stock because again, I can not go out and buy what I want.

When Sissy Bama opened his mouth about taking machine guns of the street and held up a AK that was semi auto in debate three, I went out and bought powder and primers, enough for at least two years of shooting. I especially bought small primers both pistol and rifle.
