What are the total costs involved in rebarreling a rifle(including new barrel)? What work do you want done to the action/barrel to make it a shooter?
Thanks,
Scott
You can pay as much as 600 plus the cost of the barrel depending upon what you want done. Typically just a chamber job runs 150-350 and action truing runs up to about 275. I haven't seen any accuracy difference in trued actions versus un-trued (Remington 700's). I think 95+% of the accuracy comes from the barrel. The action has to be severely out to matter IMO. Another way to look at it is to look at how accurate a factory gun is with rough barrels and mass produced actions compared to a full blown custom. Sure it might shoot groups half the size but most likely that is the barrel and not any action work. My most accurate guns have be on actions with either nothing done to them or just the lugs lapped.
Yup. About $600. You can find price lists for installation on some of the barrel maker's web sites like Pac Nor and Krieger.
If you just need a replacement barrel, and aren't looking for a custom job, consider simply sending the rifle back to the maker for a new barrel. I've seen guys do that with both Remington and Ruger, with good results.
The rifle shoots as good as new, and the cost is usually far less than having a gunsmith true an action & fit a custom barrel.
BK,
I just got back from mailing my action to Redhawk to lap, true action and install the barrel I just bought from them. My 280AI is finally coming to life! I feel like Dr. Frankenstein; I've been gathering parts and slowly putting things together. Redhawk says they'll have it done in three weeks.

NW action works right in your neck of the woods is pretty cheap for action truing. There was a write up on Snipers Hide about their rifles by the owner of the site as well.
Congratulations Scott that 280AI is a great calibre  there are few of us starting to get real close on completion of these builds!!
Looking forward to photos & a range report or 2 .
This is what I have been seeing for service charges as of late.
barrel 300-350
chamber thread and crown 250-300
action blue printing 250-300
fluting 150
muzzle break and installation 200-250
Interestingly - factor in bullet cost to get to that worn-out barrel.
I recently saw 168 gr .30 cal match bullets on sale at SPS, seconds, at $18.25 per 100 bullets.
In my experience, 5,000 rounds of accurate barrel life is a reasonable expectation, for a .308 Win. That's $912.50 in bullet cost to wear out that doggone barrel - so the bullet cost alone was likely more expensive than the new custom barrel.
