Fall Hunting Guns

Tom, that is a handsome stick on your 264 WM. I'm a sucker for beautiful wood.

You aren't kidding about that. Beautiful.

I'd be scared to take it into the woods. The first multiple rose bush I came to I'd be bleeding trying to keep from scratching it.

Nah. That rifle might get nicks and bumps but you can always throw some oil at it if it gets too banged up.

Those are love marks; each one tells the story of a great time afield.

Awesome thread, keep it coming!

My own fall will start off with my pheasant gun, a Remington Premiere 12 gauge. Remington imported these from Italy for only a few years, but it has become my favorite upland rig. Late muzzle loader will be with the plain-Jane T/C Encore 209x50, wood stock and blue barrel, with a 2-7 Leupold. Long ago lost track of how many deer that thing has taken. The antlerless centerfire season could see the .270, the .280 or the .30-06. We also have a hog hunt booked in Oklahoma in late January. I'm pretty sure the -06 will be making that trip. Coyotes will likely be a mix of rifles through the winter, but primarily the old .243. My first high-power, a 700 BDL with an older 5-15 Diavari.

Good luck on all your expeditions this year!

My farm pheasant gun is a Beretta, 687 EL, 3 inch, 20 gauge with engraved sideplates.

My deer rifle is a choice between a custom, .257 Roberts FN action, Douglas barrel, or a .270 Win, custom Model 70 (1949) Super Grade.

My elk rifles are either a .338 Federal, Sako, Model 85, Hunter Grade or a 9.3x74R, Ruger Number One, Tropical rifle.

Wow! You guys have some truly beautiful rifles. Scotty, I love seeing pics of your pre-64 338 and look forward to some new pics of it in the field. Tom, that 264 is amazing and has the best wood I've ever seen on a factory super grade. OT3, it never gets old looking at your custom super grade and FN rifles.
Joe

Thanks Joe. hen you get to be an old fart like me, you have had opportunities to either have made or to buy custom rifles as prizes for years worth of collecting. Hopefully in our system of government, at least in the past, has allowed people to collect or aggregate a collection of nice guns.

I am not sure what the future will hold with President Oglomer grabbing everything for himself and for Moochella but one can hope!

The Whelen has returned!

Here they are.... "Beauty and the Beast", lol. These are, if all goes quickly with the load work, my two rifles for the fall hunts.

The .30-06 Model of 1917 has already been out for bear this season. Not sure if it will go out again or not:

I've heard that the young fellow wants to use his 6mm Remington for deer again this year:

I've already had the Number One afield, for bear. If I get out for elk, it may well get the nod. It's always nicely sighted in at 200 yards with the 260 Accubonds:

For mule deer though, I'm thinking something CDL... Either the tried and true .25-06, or the newer, yet un-blooded .30-06 version, with 165's:

Very nice line up Guy.. Hoping you get that new 30-06 into the hunt.

Tom, those are a couple of good-looking rifles.

Guy, tried and true is always comforting when we go into the field.

tddeangelo - great looking rifles. Which one is the .35 Whelen, and what is the other? Sorry, I can't remember. I tried to keep track of Fotis' rifle inventory for a while and it threw my feeble mind into a tailspin... Now I can barely remember what I've got in the safe!

Mike - I'm thinking more and more that the .30-06 & 165's may get the nod this season... Why not?

Dang, if I do that, it's almost like coming full circle, 40 years later... It would be full circle if I carried the Model of 1917 again... But to do that, I'd have to wrestle 22 year old M700 Junior. I'm bigger, but he's mighty quick and determined... Dunno if it's worth it...

In my 30-06, 165s perform very well, Guy. I have nothing bad to say about the weight--plus, there is an excellent selection available!

Probably best to let him have that 1917! He seems to be pretty attached to it and is racking up an impressive list of kills with it.

Can I refer Guy.

This year I am using my Marlin 1895 45-70 shooting the 300 grain Sierra hollow point and my Browning Xbolt 280 Rem loaded with 145 grain Speer Grand Slams. I've also been taking my Win model 94 32 Win special with 170 grain Speers and for small game and coyotes I take my Winchester 1892 32-20 loaded with the 100 grain Hornady XTP.

The one on the left is my 35 Whelen, in a McMillan stock. It was a 30-06 originally, JES rebored it for me this summer.

The one on the right is my 264WM SuperGrade I got a couple months ago.

You guys can stop showing these pretty rifles anytime now. I've been doing a really good job and haven't visited GB for a month now. But I'm afraid that could come to an end shortly.
