Thanks guys. I am either looking at buying a slightly used 20" Ruger M77RL .308 or maybe a 24" T/C Encore in .308.

check out the tc pro hunter with the flextech stock, less recoil and the added velocity of a 28"barrel
the pro hunter also has the rotating hammer, convenient for low mounted scopes, or those with large thumbs

Everyone should have, at least one 308 in their battery. It took me a couple of years to finally decided to get one and another 9 months of wait from my gunsmith to built me one. I can't believe I waited so long. I considered the 308 as my plinking rifle. I shoot it more than any of my rifle. It's just so much fun to shoot this rifle and very accurate too.

Here's a typical 5 shot group with this rifle

IMGP1895.jpg

10 shot during load developement using the Nosler 168 grain Comp bullet. The first 5 shot has 43 grains of BLC-2 and the 5 succesive shots has half a grain more. As you can see the group did not open much. The flyer was my mistake.

I just loaded up some .308s.
And going through my notes,(I keep a seperate book on each of my rifles) The one load that seems to be very good in all my .308s with 165 grain bullets is 45 grs IMR-4064.
My 3 rifles all have 22 inch tubes. I would say the most accurate is my kimber 84 with a ziess conquest 2.5X8
And it may suprise some that second is my winchester model 88. Its a pre 64 and has an old 2.5Xb bushnell scope chief with is still quite a good scope.
With the model 88 I get great groups with a 168 grain barnes tripple shock.
My 3rd rifle is a pre 64 featherweight. That rifle is alos quite accurate and it actually shoots best with W-748. But it shoots quite well with IMR-4064.
The .308 is an easy round to work with.
The only rifle I ever owned that would not shoot the round well was a like new tang safty ruger i bought a few years back.
It was afull ! I would like to try a heavy barrel remington and probably well at some time...tj3006
