With a couple of days left before my tag expired, I filled my late-season doe tag this morning. Here are a few photos from shortly after today's hunt. I didn't take a photo of the downed doe, just didn't seem necessary.

The hunt was very easy, which was kind of nice for a change. Usually it seems that I'm hiking up some unforgiving ridge or climbing a mountain. This time I drove out onto the ranch, checked in with the rancher/wheat farmer. Sat down in the snow, and in time, glassed a few does from about 100 yards out to over 300 yards. The close one lacked a suitable backstop. The far mule deer were a little close to the skyline. The middle group was at 217 yards, sort of bunched up and facing mostly away from me. This hunt was specifically for meat, so I wanted a broadside shot.

I waited until one turned broadside, and there were no more behind her. Took my shot from sitting, with the sling wrapped around my left arm. The doe collapsed instantly. Once again the .25-06 & 115 gr Nosler Ballistic Tip came through.

Entrance wound was just behind the fore-leg. Heart was torn up pretty bad. One lung was destroyed. Exit wound was considerably larger. Backstraps & tenderloins were untouched!

Home now. I need to wipe down the rifle and clean up the Jeep a little. All's well.

Oh Bill - yes, I managed to cut myself once while skinning the deer. Cut my left hand, but had prepared for that and had bandages with me. Didn't bleed out - which I suppose is good.

Regards, Guy

Sorry for the cut but glad you got your meat.
I'm a vegetabletarian. :)

Way to go Guy. The 25-06 strikes again  I'm sure she will be good eating.

Congrats my friend,

Don

Congratulations Guy... Sounds like you did not waste any meat.. Nice looking country that you are hunting in. Enjoy the venison... What is your favorite recipe for backstraps?

Congratulations, Guy. No drama on a hunt is just alright by me! Good job.

Nice Guy glad you got to fill your tag. That must have been a sharp knife. I tough old Marines were too tough to cut.

Congrats on your freezer filler

After my wife cut herself last year cutting up our moose I picked up several of those cut proof gloves they sell for filleting fish. Just wear one on your non knife hand. They are very cheap insurance over a nasty cut/infection situation. I have had to stich myself up before and always carry a suture set in the first aid kit, but for a couple dollars and little weight of a pair of these gloves it's a no brainier.

Also added bonus to little better grip on bloody hide.

Thebear_78 - Thanks for that info, I should get those gloves!

Rol_P - Something that includes a good Malbec for the cook, while cooking is always nice!

I barely cook the backstrap steaks. They're so tender, I often don't marinate them - just into the olive oil on the skillet for a couple of minutes, season with garlic & pepper, turn them once and they're done...

Lots of veggies and either a small baked potato or rice on the side... YUM... I didn't even have time for dinner last night. Gun Club meeting, so I guess it was worth missing dinner...

Guy, congratulations on the Deer. Glad to see you have snow in your area. My son in Port Townsend is really getting tired of measuring rain by the foot. Lastly, glad to see you enjoy Malbec. The wife and I have a special fondness for Argentina's best wine.

I'll be happy to hand your son a snow shovel if he wants to come over the mountains and play in the snow - quite a bit of it on my driveway right now... :)

Malbec after, if he's old enough!

Guy

Very nice Guy.... Sure am getting tired of hearing that 25-06 stacking up so many deer. Was hoping the old/new 30-06 was going to get to hunt! Ha.

Congrats on the deer. Hard to beat some fresh venison. Just don't get no better.

Scotty - I had fully intended to take the .30-06 Rem 700... Had a box of 50 all loaded up with the 165 gr Nosler Ballistic Tip at about 2850 fps, nicely zeroed at 200 yards...

But when I walked out the door... The .25-06 and a handful of cartridges were with me.

I think it's kind of telling that when I sat down to glass the surroundings for deer, I only took one cartridge out of my pocket to put in the rifle.

All of my other rifles are just fine, but I guess I'm pretty well stuck on the .25-06 Rem...

Using that 25 Whelen again I see .
Fresh venison is a treat anywhere.

Blessings,
Dan

I fully understand that Guy. I've got a slew of great hunting rifles but it seems like whenever I'm hunting for keeps, the old P64 338 gets in the case. I did use the Mashburn this year but only because I didn't hunt past the opening day. I'd bet a buck if I had to hunt for a full 7 days I'd of had the 338 in my paws. Can't trump confidence.

Congrats on the deer Guy.

Trying to clean a deer without cutting yourself is one of life's impossible tasks I do believe.

I like your style sir.
A good Malbec is hard to beat !
