I have never re-sized brass to fit another caliber but it looks like I am going to have to do something
I know that I have to neck it up it is not that hard to do is it?
Maybe I will get some Nolser in the 06 and give it a try. I never thought of Laupa brass I have heard good things about it as well. Has anyone tried to neck up Laupa brass?
PS. Scotty thanks for the information regarding picking up brass but they will not ship it to Canada from the US

Dan,

It's really easy. I don't know what dies you are running. But last week I got 100 06 cases and necked them up to 338. All I did was take my 338 neck die and put my tapered expander in it and ran them through the press. Make sure you use plenty of lube. According to my Redding catalog you should have no problems doing this in one step and with no special forming or trim dies.

Jake

I have RCBS dies for the 35 Whelen as Forster does not make a die for that caliber.
I am now only using my Rockchucker for seating bullets as the Forster Co-axial is so much easier to work with on resizing brass. I was wondering if I just use my FL re-sizing die or can I use the Sinclair 35 caliber expander die?
I hope this old dog can learn a new trick

Dan

Dan,

I'd say you are ready to go and loaded for bear. Nicely done!

I think I figured it out myself, I would have to run them through the FL resizing die.
I loaded up another 20 to go out to the range this week likely Tuesday after work  This time just me and the 35 and my Chrony. I will take my time and see what I can do

Dan - so happy to see your rifle coming together so nicely. That load will handle just about anything and for those rare occasions when you feel undergunned you have your .270!!

I use a slip-on Pachmyer Decelerator pad for bench work with my rifles. E-z to move form one rifle to another and it works pretty good. I usually fire 3 or 4 rifles whenever I get to the range to allow for barrel cooling. Throw in a couple hundred rounds of pistol and I know what you mean when you say you lose your focus.

CsC I like the way you think  I will have a lot more time once my contract is up at the end of August. But I feel really comfortable with the Whelen. I just have to concentrate on one job at a time.
I know once I have it shooting exactly where I want it. She will be my go to rifle especially for Elk and Moose :)
I have the 270 as a very adequate back up:), I will likely use it for my deer rifle especially after I get the CDS dials for the VX6 I have on top of her 8)

If you can get a tapered expander as you may put too much pressure on the standard expander unit and actually crush the neck and shoulder. The tapered expander starts at a much smaller diameter and as you press it into the neck it slowly opens up to your desired diameter versus all at once.

Jake

Not sure if mine is tapered or not. I bought it from Sinclair and I used it on my new brass and it worked great.
I do not think it would shape the slope of the shoulders like the RCBS FL resizing die would so I will give it a try once I get some brass.

Dan

Dan, check around, as you may be able to score Norma brass in the North.

I would think if you have RCBS dies, and you lube the inside of the necks, you will have no trouble expanding them necks out.

The 30-06 Lapua brass sounds like a great option though. It should be very tough brass and outlast anything else that is available. I don't know why I didn't think of that for myself..

My RCBS .35 Whelen die set was an early one before they went to a tapered expander. Wrecked a few 30-06 shells doing the conversion. I called RCBS with my problem and they sent me a tapered expander, no charge. No more wrecked cases. 8)

I had to look on my RCBS 35 Whelen dies, vintage year '86.

Jeeze, I was only 9 years old! HA!

I would have been 16 :) Think I bought my first Whelen in 1989 a 7600 pump.

Scott, my daughter was born in 77 and gerry I have pimples as old as u young pups
Yes I think I am going to purchase either Laupa or Nosler -06 brass and neck them up.
If I take my time & use new brass they will work fine as they will fire form to my chamber.

Blessings,
Dan

Well guys just waiting for my cousin to show up and then we are going out to the range :) to play with my 35 Whelen and his new 550 CZ in Mr. H & H (375) and he also has a 257 BEE. I have never shot one of those before we are going to be breaking in the 257 the 375 is a used one. The previous owner took the 375 on 1 hunt to Africa and then came back and sold it 8) he got it for a heck of a price :)
Well I will likely have photos so I will be keeping Mike busy later today or sometime tomorrow morning

Blessings,
Dan
