Got out for one last range trip today before elk season opens for me this weekend. Just needed to verify my drops at distance and get some practice in. Taking 2 guns this trip. My primary gun will be my trusty Rem 721 chambered in 300 H&H. That one will be loaded with 185gr Berger Hunting VLD's on top of 69.5gr RL-22, CCI 250 primer and Norma cases. Velocity on that one is 2925fps. My backup gun, or more appropriately my cross canyon cannon, will be my Savage 338 Lapua. It will be loaded with 250gr Berger OTM hybrids sitting on top of a moderate charge of 93 grains of N570, CCI 250, Lapua brass. Those are clocking in at 2826fps.

Played around with both guns shooting steel at various distances and stretched the Lapua out to 1K yards. Didn't bother with any pictures this trip but had fun with the range to myself getting in some last minute practice and verification before I head out. Hopefully I'll be posting pictures in the hunting section soon of a great big bull!

For sure, we'll all be pulling for you. One of the pleasures of shooting in the winter months is that the shooter almost always has the range to himself/herself.

Very true Mike, but I was surprised given the timing before elk season. I guess I did pick the right time of day as 3 pickups drove in the gate as I was leaving!

Good luck on getting a big bull, and make sure you take lots of pics for us to see :) Your 300 H&H sounds cool, hope you can use it to get him.

Gerry, it's probably my favorite rifle I own. I used my dad's for years when I was a kid and then he found a matching one and bought it for me for my 18th birthday. That gun has some special memories and is extremely accurate. It has slayed its fair share of Elk! It wears a modern scope these days. But it put two rounds about an inch apart on the steel today at 545 yards. I was simulating taking a shot and then a quick follow-up shot. Can't ask for much more from a gun that's older than I am!

Here's a pic of the old gal.

That's really nice not only cool but has some great history and can shoot great :)

Nice...

All the way around. Just plain nice...

Best of luck on the hunt. Rifle/load accuracy is certainly handled.

Regards, Guy

Good job getting it done beforehand. There is an old rock pit about a quarter mile from where we camp. Amazing how many guys pull in there the day before opening day to zero rifles. This year they needed a range master.
