Finalizing my 6mm-284 Load

A few months ago I swapped for an Interarms Mark X chambered in 6mm-284 wearing an older Bell & Carlson synthetic stock. It was fairly ugly, but the metal was in decent shape and the swap was very reasonable. With the rifle, I was given some handloads and the guy told me what he had been loading. I had no intention of firing his handloads or using his data or even the powder he had used, which I think was Re19. The first loads I tried were 95-grain Partitions over Ramshot Magnum. They shot okay, I was getting groups under an inch with hardly any effort at all but I noted velocity variations that were greater than I had hoped for. I was disappointed because Magnum meters so well.

Then the 90-grain Accubonds appeared. I stopped load development on the rifle and waited to get my hands on the ABs. I tried them with Magnum and I tried them with H4831SC. I saw much lower velocity spreads with the H4831SC, but with both powders my groups were still two inches and up. The exception was one 4831 load that produced a 0.88 inch group, but I did not pursue it because a half-grain of powder either way opened up to over two inches. That was the day I decided to abandon the AccuBond all together and go right back to the Partition.

Since H4831SC lowered the velocity variations I was seeing during my struggles with the AccuBond, I decided to give it a whirl with the 95-grain Partitions. I loaded up six charges of H4831SC and as the charge increased up to what I consider a maximum, groups tightened up to a little over half an inch. I then loaded a few rounds with this charge and varied seating depth a little and the sweet spot is very near the OAL I had been working with.

According to QuickLOAD, I should be at about 3220 fps @56,000 psi. I am actually getting about 3340 fps, and the corresponding pressure appears to be a little shy of 58,000 psi. Velocity variations are about 10 to 15 fps 98% of the time and I can live with that (with Magnum, 30 to 50 fps spreads within a three-shot group were pretty much the norm). Everything looks good at this level to me.

It's nice to have a rifle in a 6mm caliber that will actually shoot. Quite refreshing, actually, after going through SIX different rifles chambered in .243 Winchester that would not shoot MOA!

That sounds like a great load! Heck, that load is screamin really RR! Too bad about the 90 AB, but if your getting that kinda speed out of the 95 PT, you can't really ask for more.

Sounds like a sweet cartridge. It is always gratifying when our expectations are met or exceeded in the realm of shooting.

Nice job RR. See all it took was instead of calling it a 243-284, you went logically and called it a 6mm-284, and there you have it! :p  Those 6mm's shoot! Nice job, and that's a screamer.

Good to see. I know that one of mine after I put that new scope on drove tacks with the last of my 100gr sierras 4 in one ragged hole after final adjustment. It's a sweet cartridge now I need one that fits me!!

LOL
There may be something to that, David. I went for the longest time without any 6mm in my battery, and for quite some time I pined for something in 6mm Remington. Every time I ran across something I would like to have I was broke, and then one day a rifle in .243 Winchester just fell in my lap. I figured "what the heck?" And all through the process of fighting no less than six rifles that just would not shoot I continued to think "what the heck?" Then one day this rifle fell in my lap. Except for my difficulties with the Accubonds (I couldn't get them to shoot in my .280 either), this rifle's been a pleasure to work with.

And yup, I am very satisfied with the velocity I am getting. I really only wanted about 3200 fps out of it, but I'll just have to accept 3340 fps and be happy.

"groups tightened up to a little over half an inch"

That and 3340 fps are real nice! You just showed what persistence in thinking through the process and working up a load is all about. Excellent accuracy and velocity, with a dandy bullet I might add... Congrats!

Should you feel the urge to experiment a little more, I'd recommend trying the 95 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip. It's far tougher than might be expected, and remains the single most accurate bullet I've ever fired from my 6mm Remington.

BTW - 3340 fps is EXACTLY what my .25-06 churns up with a 100 gr bullet. Flat shooting little rascal...

RR that is a great caliber and I think that it will tighten up even more once you become comfortable loading for it
Look forward to hearing more on it.

Blessings,
Dan

Shot three 5-shot groups yesterday and one was bad---probably attributable to me...I have to remember how to hold the rifle because of the way the stock rides in my shooting rest. Once I corrected myself, I shot a group that was just a hair over an inch and one that was about 0.8 inch. The load is 54.4 grains of H4831 driving the 95-grain Partition, and I think I am going to go with it.

If anyone else has QuickLOAD and cares to check it out and let me know what they see, I'll surely welcome any comments on it. I've run QL myself numerous times and see no errors in my inputs but I have been known to overlook things from time to time. OAL is about 2.9 inch and my measured case capacity is about 65.9 grains (I'm relying on memory with that figure).

Sixty-five point nine is less than standard case capacity, which would indicate a pretty good boost in pressure. However, if you are actually 0.40 inches longer than standard case length, then it would allow for a substantial drop in pressure back to safe levels. Verify those figures and I'll rerun the data. Otherwise, it looks as if you are golden.

I agree totally!
But I wouldn't hesitate in giving RL-22 and 25 a try with the AB's if it were me also,,,if that bullet was my original goal. Or other powders for that matter.

DrMike, I forgot I have a copy of my loading spreadsheet here on my iPhone, but 65.9 is correct and OAL is 2.900 inches. I also plugged in a weighting factor of .40 even though the program suggests using .33 for overbite cartridges. I have found that the weighting factor does affect the results. I use .4 as a measure to be conservative.

You're in great shape. The OAL (lack of penetration into the powder column) negates the modestly reduced case capacity. I have weighing factor set at 0.5.
