Finally got some reloading done....now to shoot some.....

Well, I decided I ve just been working WAY to much lately, so when I finished up my last meeting at work Monday I packed the car and left for SD tuesday a.m. Spent the day visiting with the folks and doing some reloading with Dad. Lots of driving and a long day - but worth it. Special thanks to 257 Ackley for the LEE priming tool. It worked fantastic! Even impressed my Dad.
So, the pic below shows 100 rounds of 250-3000 Savage loaded with 35grs. of IMR 4064 and 100 gr. ballistic tips. Sorry, but the other 50 rounds are loaded with the competitions 75gr. V-Max over 40 grains of H4350. Now all I need to do is find time to try 'em out. CL

Nice... The 75 gr V-Max for vermin and the 100 gr Noslers for pronghorn & deer I presume. It's good to spend a day loading. And shooting. And another day or two hunting.

A long drive in good country, with family waiting at the other end isn't all bad either, particularly if you've got a decent radio/stereo. I still enjoy a good road trip.

What sort of speed you getting from H4350 and those VMaxes in your AI? I run a conservative charge of H-380 and get great accuracy at about 3600 fps.

I'm jealous... I'd love to have an adventure planned this fall!

That 257 AI is an absolutely brilliant cartridge; it'll do it all!

By the way - very cool that you're still using the terrific little .250-3000! That's a great cartridge from all I hear and read, under-appreciated these days.

Always thought it would be great to have a set of Savage 99's in: .250, .300 and a big one in .358 Win.

The 250 Savage is a highly underrated cartridge. Your handiwork does look pretty. I'm looking forward to your range reports.

Ran out a minute this afternoon and tried the new reloads. Looks like we are back in the sweet spot. However, I think I have a problem with the rifle that I just cant figure. If you look at both photos (one for each load) first shot is low, the next is "high" and then it starts to come together. The Honady load is five shots, three final shots in the "middle" hole. I set the rifle down for five minutes, picked it up again and shot the group with the noslers. Again, one low and the next two close together and right where they should be. We are not stringing high or other signs that make m,e think the barrel is heating up.... I got interupted so I didnt shoot any more today but I had very similar results with two other groups this summer. Literally you could almost lay the targets on top of each other and have the bullet holes line up.... similar pattern. I cant miss that consistiently! Barrel is free floated, everything seems to be tight, scope has been back to leupold for a check up after I dropped it 2 years @ ago. Recipie for these loads has shot sub inch groups in the past so given the shots today I think sts the rifle. What do I try next? Can I really be "missing that consistiently?

Has the action been bedded to the stock?

I've seen rifles that would consistently put a round or two high, then settle down and shoot well after a few shots. I think the first few shots the rifle action was snugging itself into the stock. Whatever the reason, once I bedded the action firmly to the stock, the problem ceased.

Worth a try perhaps? Looks like your .250 will shoot a tight group once it settles in...

Was the bore clean to start with? I've also found that my rifles tend to shoot more consistently after they've had a couple of fouling shots through them. Before that, some do throw a round or two away from the rest of the group.

+ ONE on bedding the stock and free floating the barrel. Those sure were good looking bullets.

YUP- This stock was bedded full length when I bought it. I Free floated the barrel as it used to string them pretty bad. Once she was floated that stopped. Lug/chamber/action area is bedded solid. This darn thing is capable of those little cloverleaf groups, its just so sporadic. The bedding at the rear action srew is marginal (actually cracked and reglued). Ive tried to "rebed" the tang of the action but I am probably to chicken to horse out enough material to do it right. It is a home made stock and the wrist of the stck is pretty slim. I have thought about having the rear action screww pillar bedded. Sorry Guy- I cant shoot a group like tat w/o a bench Maybe I should borrow a lead sled and see if that cures my problem....maybe its a "first shot yank/push". I have been know to do that. Barrel was not really clean, but it was "bore-snaked" before I put it away last time. Pull a patch through before I shoot. CL
